Caffeine free

Evening all,
Bowel and bladder issues are causing distress. Seen bladder bowel nurses who advised me to up my fybogel to morning and evening along with two tablets that my doctor phoned me saying to start taking along with my fybogel in the morning, that I can’t remember the name of.
Clinic nurses also said to lay off caffeine,I’m not a fizzy drink drinker so caffeine free coffee and tea. Question can caffeine free drinks cause really bad diarrhea…really bad?
I’m either really constipated or I can’t think about leaving the house…or to be frank leave upstairs.

Hello, I drink some decaf Tea once a day and decaf coffee from time to time but don’t get diarrhoea.

( also eat prunes and sometimes take Dulcolax for constipation- plus plenty of fibre).

Caffine can irritate bladder/bowels…maynot actually cause the problem but can make it worse

If you’ve changed more than one thing - switched to decaf, for instance plus started to take whatever weapons-grade laxative that the doc has put you on - it’s going to be hard to tell what’s causing what.

Gut problems are the pits. I’m a martyr to my wayward gut and do think that day after relentless day it has a worse impact on quality of life than any other symptom.

I found my severe constipation was somewhat relieved by reducing my caffeine intake. I now have one coffee in the morning, a few teas during the day and peppermint tea inbetween. It has made a big difference for me.

Have you tried a stool softner like docusate sodium , also make sure you’re drinking enough water. MS has made my constipation worse, so I now take 3 docusate every morning and evening, plus I have a smoothie for breakfast made with almond milk which is good for your bowels, blueberries, oats milled flaxseed and a spoonful of peanut butter.
Butternut squash is also good for your bowels. I only drink water and ginger tea, but make sure you consume at least 2.5 litres. I’ve had IBS for years, and had to cut out lots of different types of foods and then MS which brought along a whole host of food and medication allergies. Fibregel only add fibre and doesn’t assist with opening your bowels, so having 2 sachets twice daily is adding loads of bulk to your bowel movements.

Thanks for all the suggestions and help
I think I maybe went cold turkey to soon instead of gently easing into them.
Animali, Docusate the the pills I couldn’t remember.
Trying as much as I can on the water front

I agree that too much fibre can bung up an already sluggish gut even more. It’s one of these things where the ‘eat more fibre because it’s good for you’ advice that makes sense at population level can sometimes just not work at individual level.

Well, Rocenante, at least you know you’re not alone!

When you have this issue you soon learn what helps and what hinders having a bowel movement. It all tends to exacerbate other symptoms which isn’t nice and you end up being caught in a vicious cycle.
