Boudica needs a holiday destination. Any ideas?

Hello all,

I’ve been having a chat with my friend Poll (aka Boudica). She needs to find holiday destinations that she can reach without too much difficulty, suit her needs, don’t cost the earth and make her feel a little bit ‘special’ (by which I don’t mean special needs!)

So, she needs accommodation that is suitably adapted, she needs

  • a hoist as she can’t walk or transfer
  • a shower chair / commode chair
  • a profiling bed
  • obviously it must be accessible

She’ll take a carer with her so doesn’t need a holiday in a nursing home!

Poll has been on a cruise (and in fact is going on another short cruise soon - this enquiry is thinking ahead to next Spring really), but it costs a bomb to get to Southampton from Yorkshire. She either gets a coach, which means only taking a manual, attendant pushed wheelchair or a vastly expensive taxi, so she can take her chariot (powerchair). So neither is a good option. And there don’t seem to be short cruises from anywhere except Southampton. Of course, in order to get the equipment needed on a cruise, it has to be in and out of Southampton since the equipment comes from the company Mobility at Sea.

She’s been to hotels in Llandudno and Blackpool that have all the facilities, and aren’t too distant, but what other options are there? Flying is so hard for someone who cannot transfer. And then you still have all the difficulties of the appropriate amenities and the cost too.

Where do people go on holiday where they can get all the equipment she needs? And where she can feel a bit spoilt, get dressed up in smart outfits (with matching accessories of course), and not pay the earth for it? A short break is probably the best option as of course, she has to pay for herself and her carer.

Any suggestions?

Sue

Thanks ever so Susie, for kindly asking the question on my behalf.

Summat I`ve discovered which annoys me re cruising for disabled…

I`ve been on P & O and cant praise them enough, and Mobility at Sea, who supply and set up all the kit I need, BUT I have learned that Fred Olsen and MSC cruislines wont allow profiling beds to be taken on board. Humph! Boycotted then!

The search continues!

l would be ‘honoured’ to entertain the wonderful Poll - although we have a wet-room - we would have to hire profiling bed and hoist.And guest room for carers. -{plus room for a pony}

We are north of the Cotswolds - very near Stratford/Evesham/Cheltenham - so areas l know Poll would love.

Thanks ever so Frances! We used to go to a caravan park at Slimbridge very often, so do have a liking for the Cotswolds.

Think I`ve just sorted summat…not telling where yet, as it might put the mockers on it!
