b12 dosage

Hi I have been searching old posts but can’t find advice on which b12 dosage would be best. My level is 300 and the ms nurse advised just to take tablets. I know there are different types as I have been looking on amazon but would appreciate any ideas. Thanks. zoe

Hi Zoe,

I love taking B12. I think that it really helps me. Theer are three type hydroxocobalamin, cyanocobalamin and methylcobalamin.

I take cyanocobalamin, as it is the cheapest. This is converted in the body into methylcobalamin which can then be absorbed into the bloodstream. It takes about three hours to get into the bloodstream. I think that most people would recommend 1000mcg a day. I take 100mcg as I find that 1000mcg is just too much for me and I start getting hives after a while. I would start on a low dose and then work your way up and see how you get on. Everyone is different. I get mine from Holland and Barret but I am sure that you could get it cheaper elsewhere. It really helped me in my last relapse. I think that I was very deficient in it.

Hope that this helps.

I take 100mcg, but I have absolutely no idea what if anything they are doing for me - I take them purely because they can’t hurt and may just do some good!

Fwiw, when my daughter was found to be B12 deficient, she was prescribed 50mcg a day. (She takes 100mcg though.)

My wife (RRMS) has a family history of B12 deficiency and decided to get a full blood screen.

Her B12 was in the 250 region, considered slightly low but nothing to worry about, however they offered her an injection.

At that time I asked her GP if she couldn’t simply take tablets instead (doesn’t like needles). He explained that (in the majority of people) the body finds it quite difficult to absorb B12 taken orally and that an injection is far more effective.

Interesting article here which discusses how the minimum acceptable level of B12 differes around the planet:-
