After doing some reading online in regards to B12 & MS I’m thinking about supplementing with B12.
As far as I know I’m not B12 deficient but some of the write ups that I’ve read still suggest that people with MS should still supplement their B12 intake.
Apparently though you should pick the correct form of B12, especially if you have MS, I think theres about 3 or 4 different forms ?
The one that stood out to me for MS was B12 (methylcobalamin)
The one that had worst write ups overall out of all types of B12 was the cyanocobalamin form, which is probably the most common type found in B12 supplements as its cheap and easy to manufacturer.
I also read that the methylcobalamin form can help regenerate myelin
Another thing I read was that taking Omeprazole or any pump inhibitor treatment long term, which I have been, can also impact on B12 absorption from foods and supplements.
Just wondering how many here supplement with B12 and which type of B12 is most popular with us MS’ers ?
At the moment I’m only toying with idea of supplementing with B12.
I do get fatigued but not to the point where I’m wiped out, my interest at the moment is how “apparently” only certain forms of B12 help with regenerating myelin, and reading up on B12 I’ve found that the most popular type, Cyanocobalamin, although is the easiest to absorb, it’s also the one that gets flushed from the body the quickest, also it’s not recommended to take long term.
It’s also the cheapest as it’s synthetically made, so it tends to be the choice of GP’s, whether orally or injected.
It also contains Cyanide, so your liver actually works harder to flush it out of the system, hence why it’s not in the system long enough to have better effects.
From what I can find, M****ethylcobalamin is the best option all round, especially for people with MS, as apparently it’s not synthetically made, so sticks around for longer and helps to regenerate damaged myelin, I believe theres proven studies on this ?
But like all supplements, finding out what’s good and what’s not is a bloody minefield.
I’ve also read whilst looking into B12 that MS’ers should avoid taking a B12 complex as some of the other B vitamins in the complex boost the immune system, which in turn might end up aggravating our MS symptoms.
We need our immune system to be working but not over sensitive.
