ATOS LETTER

Hi all,

Had a letter from ATOS this morning, saying that they want a medical practioner to visit me regarding my appeal claim for DLA. I was wndering how soon after the letter arrives is the appoimtment normally made and as I work full time can I stipulate a time without being penalised? Also how horrendous are these visits? The letter says that I may have a physical examination. Im getting a bit worried about it all now.

It’s many years ago since I had a medical for DLA but it was OK. One dr was a bit brusque but the second one was lovely. They do all the usual neurological tests(touch your nose then their finger etc) plus ask about your daily difficulties. It was less intrusive than I expected.

Good Luck

Jane

Hi, when you receive a date for the docs visit, if it isnt convenient, just say when would be acceptable. Working defo should not penalise you in any way.

I have had docs visit me at home for DLA. Have someone with you, as I asked to strip off to my undies and examined on the bed.

Hope it goes well.

blimey, now I am worried!!! i havent got anyone that can be home with me. If the doctor wants me to strip can I refuse?

I was really worked up when the doctor came , however one test he asked me to do was stand up and close my eyes, the next thing i remeber was him holding me as it was the perfect test as i nearly fell over and he had to catch me, on the way out I heard him talking to hubby and saying your wife may need some assistance with walking i then found out a month later the questions he did ask were very ms related hopefully when we all get reassessed we may get folks that have the same knowledge as this doctor

Hiya Em

Please don’t worry. It is just simply a GP visit. A normal doctor coming to visit you that’s all. You do not need to ‘strip’ if you don’t want to. All he or she is doing is assessing you. Can you stand? Touch your toes? Tickles your feet. Do you wobble? Can you walk or do you need to hold something. Get’s the little ‘hammer’ out and tests your knee reactions. Etc. All in normal days work for a Doc.

Oh and they also ask questions so I think that’s why a lot of people like to have someone there to help them. Have a few things wrote down on how you struggle with day to day things. Making meals, cutting it up. Holding things. Getting upstairs and how. Etc.

I never had to take any clothes off. In fact I take more off for physio! Still it never bothers me at all, as I’m all for doing things the right way to help myself and I want them to check my muscles when moving.

Again, don’t worry. Just have your notes prepared to help you remember.

Take care,

Marty

Sorry if I alarmed you, hun, when I mentioned getting undressed. It was that way for me, back in 2000. Maybe it`s changed. Hope so.

Hi Poll,

No worries, it doesnt take much to alarm me, haha.
