By this I mean: I was having my morning Coffee and fiddled in the kitchen for a bit. I went down stairs to put a load of laundry in and realized I STILL had my swig of coffee in my mouth! I had NEVER even SWALLOWED it =( I catch myself doing this often. It’s like I have to conciously make myself swallow as it just doesn’t come as natural anymore =\
Anyhow, I’m new, undiagnosed, ( long and bumpy road) and this is a symptom that just seems BIZARRE to me =( Why on earth would I just hold coffee in my mouth?? Thanks so much for taking time to read my post =)
Hi, I’m new too and was diagnosed in May. I get this quite often, and the having to concentrate on swallowing. No idea if it’s a symptom or not! It’s a strange thing, isn’t it? Just another of many strange symptoms!!
Hello H, I am dx and I have a similar problem, that when I have a mouthful of coffee I cannot swallow and have to spit it out or choke…weird, but never experienced it your way.
I get this alot. I also get to where it feels like my larynx is swollen as well and keeps me from swallowing.
I especially get this if I am trying to take medicine. It’s like my brain won’t tell my tongue to work and let it go down.
I haven’t been dx either.
[/quote] I get this quite a lot too phew! i thought it was just me lol it’s like I completely forget how to swallow n really have to think about it for it to happen the lump in my throat/larynx feeling swollen seems to coincide with a lot of other symptoms to "/ I’m not dx’d yet either

This happens a lot with Parkinsons victims as well. And, of course, it is not funny for either of us. Swallowing is supposed to be an automatic reflex - you “sort of” know when you are ready, and the muscles work. When the nerves do not send the right signals at the right time, we have to consciously think about swallowing to make it happen - and sometimes it does.
Standard advice is to keep your head upright (or even tilted back a bit). This makes it easier for the swallowing muscles to work.
Best thing is a referral to a Speech and Language Therapist, who should be able to help quite a lot.
