Amitriptyline

Hey everyone The doc has suggested that its time to try amitriptyline. I’m a bit worried about the side effects because I already struggle with dizziness and my bladder retains water. I know everyone’s different but just wondering what others experiences of it are Thanks x

All of these drugs seem to have short term side effects, but if they persevere, most people get through that stage OK. I was unlucky with amitriptyline because, while it helped a lot, after several months it started causing loads of ulcers and I had to switch to pregabalin.

One thing about amitriptyline: it was like taking a strong sleeping pill for me. I don’t have to get up at any particular time, so it wasn’t such a big deal, but I would regularly sleep in until 11am!

I hope it works well for you.

I take Amitryptiline just before I go to bed. I haven’t had any side effects. Possibly I sleep through them. I do get more tired and I need two alarms to get me up for work. But I found it did deal with many of the symptons you describe. But everybody is different

Thanks guys x

Hi I was diagnosed in November and Like you have been putting off taking because of fear of side effects. My doctor has said its OK to break the tablet in half and build up slowly. As I was too scared to take at night I took a 1/4 dose this morning just to see if I had any immediate effects and will take more tonight. Hope it goes OK.

Hi Zoe - I was taking amitriptyline 25mg at night, gained lot of weight, also made me feel quite groggy and sleepy… BUT in beginning it did work, its like with all these tabs, there’s side effects. I’m taking pregabalin now, since June, OK in beginning, now not so good…everyone is different, what works for one, wont work for others, its the same as this disease, it affects us all in different ways… unfortunately… I think it would be much easier if we all had same symptoms, so docs could get the right tabs for us all… I would say give it a go, takes a while to get into your system, but suck it and see… good luck… x G

No prob. Can you let me know how it affects you Zoe if at all. Thanks everyone, think ill give it a go x

I’ve taken 3 doses now. Last night I took half a tablet and went into a deep sleep but was in slightly more pain this morning

Probally as I didn’t move much in the night but apart from that no other Side effects yet. Good luck let me know how you get on. Zoe

I’m not going to be any help as i’ve never taken it, I just wanted to say that I hope it works for you.

One side effect I get is that I have very vivid dreams, not unpeasant at all.

Have always drempt and remembered them but since taking amitriptyline they seem to be longer and more

detailed - maybe that’s why there is the word ‘trip’ in the name of the drug!

Hope it works for you,

Jen xx

Thanks everyone x

Just read some of your replies and see someone mentions about the vivid dreams, I too dreamnt on them… people I didnt know, strange vivid dreams… spoke to consultant, who’d never heard of it… strange that as people have mentioned it… if they were nice dreams, wouldnt say so much, not nightmares, just vivid!!!

Ihave been taking Amitripiline for @ two years now and Pregabalin for over one year I usually sleep well but it is a @dead ’ sleep and I usually don’t expect to be up before 11am. I have not noticed any side effects, but I don’t think they are helping me sleep so well now I have taken my usual two earlier and being more awake than I havel sll day have taken two more and they are just begining to make me sleep now. I will try to get in to see gp in the morning I think it is time to change to something else.
