Hi everyone hope you all had a lovely xmas. I just wanted to ask if anyone has had a problem with shoes. I managed to go out for a night out last night for the first time in a long time. I wore a pair of shoes that I have worn many other times and never had a problem. However today I am in agony with my left foot in particular the heel. It so sore to put to the ground and the tingling is driving me mad. Also as it’s Christmas I had a few drinks and have found today I am suffering really really badly with numbness and shooting pains in my legs. Im am in the process of being diagnosed and due to to start meds next month. Thanks for any advice
Could it be you spent more time on your feet than you usually do ?
i know if i have a drink , i’m always more achey the next day .
Hi Anon I have experienced this problem wearing certain shoes, to be honest this was one of my first signs of ms as when I tried to wear heels I was off balance even with shoes I’ve wore loads if times. I also felt a burning sensation on my feet for a day or two after I wore certain shoes so now I only wear flat shoes. I get complete numbness in both my feet and shocking pains all over my body ,the consultant I see prescribed me Gabapentin which has helped reduce the pain and amount of shocking pains I get. If these symptoms you have continue you should give your G.P a call and make them aware of these symptoms and see if they can give you something to help. Polly x
Hi, I am a diagnosed person, and now cannot wear any shoes except trainers or lace-up walking boots. Like Polly, problems with shoes was one of my earliest signs, though I did not associate it with being ill. Although it sounds ridiculous now, I just assumed shoes had declined in quality over the years, to the point they were all so uncomfortable. I’d never worn extreme shoes. I used to be able to wear a simple court shoe with a kitten heel - a classic for work - but over the years, found I could no longer wear even those - even ones I’d had for ages. I no longer know what I’d do if I had to attend a posh function or a job interview, as obviously you cannot go in trainers or walking boots. My shoe problem affects my whole style and wardrobe, as I cannot team evening clothes or floaty summer dresses with walking boots or trainers. The latest development is I cannot even wear carpet slippers! They’re “mule” type slippers, that have an enclosed toe, but are open at the heel, and have a small wedge. Although they are made of soft, velvety fabric, even this is now pressing too hard on the sore tops of my feet. I’m exasperated, as I only recently bought them. I’m now wearing “slipper socks” in the house - i.e. not really a shoe or slipper at all. I’m sorry none of this is very encouraging news. It doesn’t affect everyone this way, but it certainly has me. I know I should be grateful I can still walk a long way (miles!) in my trusty walking boots, so style should be way down my list of concerns. But as a woman, it’s hard to accept never really looking smart or glamorous any more, because I’m permanently stuck in boots or trainers - and because of that, mostly jeans, even in high summer. It isn’t just heels that are the problem. It’s anything that has a strap or edge that crosses the top of the foot. I can’t wear flip-flops with a toe post, because they don’t provide enough support. So it’s extra-wide fitting, lace-up everything. No heels, no straps, no slip-ons. Tina
Hi Tina What you’ve described about the shoes you wear is what I do now, I can only wear flat shoes, flat boots and trainers. I was never one for wearing high heels always small heels but can’t manage them now. I was at a wedding earlier this summer and put my shoes on and felt off balance and had aching feet like you didn’t relate it to being unwell as had no other symptoms then it became an every day thing with any shoes. It is a pain now trying to match shoes with an outfit if my going out for a special occasion,I am fortunate that my work dress code is casual so I’m mostly in jeans and trainers. Polly x
I am having trouble with boots as they just hurt my ankle bones, anything touching them even the bed sheet hurts, yet I can prod them as hard as I like with my fingers no problem, bit gutted I can t wear my lovely new winter boots though
I’m having real problems with shoes/boots/slippers too as nearly everything hurts! It hasn’t helped that since having the blood clot, one foot is also now bigger than the other either. I would have said that I had no symptoms prior to August this year but I hadn’t been able to wear even low heels for a long while as they hurt my feet so maybe I did after all.
Hi, I also experience much uncomfortable after wearing anything but flats. The numbness, pins and needles and at times this then travels further up my body than just my feet! Hopefully this is not the case for you though. I do have very tingly legs a lot of the time. Often just from walking up the stairs. Hopefully this will improve over time but it has already been 8 weeks since my most recent relapse and things have not improved a great deal. Definitely make yr MS nurse arp ware if you haven’t already done so. There may be something he/she can offer to help. Hope you feel better soon. Take care.
Thanks for all the replies. I really dont know whats going on but my foot is still reslly sore and its travelling up my leg. Ive also got a constant twitch in my left arm. All this for a night out. Dont think I will will bother again
