Because i’m in my 50’s I don’t know if the new symptoms i’m having are related to the MS or if (as my husband says) it could just be old age creeping up. I now have pains in my hips (especially the right one) and shoulder (again the right one). Any one sle got anything to add?
Hi Jackie,
50s is NOT old - especially these days - and I don’t think you should expect pain as a normal part of being 50-something - or even as part of getting old at all. Pain is an indication something’s wrong - not every older person is in pain.
I know I’m a fine one to talk - I’m sure dismissing everything as “being the wrong side of 40” contributed to the delay in my diagnosis - probably by some years! Although I have at least now learnt the lessons of hindsight, and don’t assume pain is “normal” past a certain age. My mother wasn’t in pain all the time in her 40s and 50s, neither are friends of mine who are older than me.
I don’t know for sure if your pain is MS-related (though I’d hazard a guess it is), but even if it isn’t, it isn’t just an inevitable part of growing older. I don’t believe you should accept this as normal - although you may have to accept it as “normal for MS”.

Even if the pain isn’t MS related, like Anitra said, pain is a sign something is wrong. Probably worth a talk with someone to make sure its nothing too bad. and 50 isnt old!
Thank you Anitra and faula. your comments cheered me up tonight. This is my first time on a forum and just having an electronic chat with other MS sufferers is refreshing to me. I talk to a lot of people who dont have MS and always feel they dont ‘get’ my symptoms or on/off days.

I’d go and see a doctor. Your pain may be MS-related but there are other conditions could be causing it and your doctor will help you sort out which it is.
Don’t assume that everything is MS related and don’t suffer or assume that pain is normal. My parents are in their 70s and pain free (unless they’ve overdone the gardening!), so pain isn’t an inevitable part of aging. Even if your pain is part of your MS, you shouldn’t have to put up with it - your doctor should be able to prescribe pain relief.
