Working Diagnosis

Hi,

Quick question, after a long drawn out process of loss of motor function in leg, MRI (3 very bright patches in brain and 2 on spinal cord), LP (clear), IV Steroids, oral steroids, vision loss, EVP testing (showed difference between left and right eye), more recent MRIs (have shown an imrovement in the patches, still there but dull) I have finally been given a ‘working diagnosis’ of MS by by neuro.

It wasn’t until after I left that I started to query the actual term WORKING diagnosis. He said the MS nurse will be in touch and I will begin immuno suppressant therapy at some stage.

Can anyone shed any light on this for me.

Thankyou in advance.

Hi Helen - I would guess you have MS. The MS nurse will be in touch…

It seems like your neuro is 99% sure you have MS. MS is very hard to diagnose

but your neuro seems convinced. By ‘working diagnosis’ I should imagine he means

you do have it, but which particularly type may not be quite distinguishable yet.

All the best

Ali

Ali, those were my thoughts as well, but I’m pretty new to this all and wanted to be sure.

Thankyou

Hmm. I’m not so sure. How long was that drawn out process? How long was it between your MRI scans? What did the neuro mean by immuno-suppressant therapy because disease modifying drugs are not normally described that way (and are not normally prescribed in the UK after one attack)?

I think I’d wait for the letter if I were you. And if that didn’t make things very much clearer, I think I’d be asking questions and maybe for a second opinion.

Sorry if I’ve added to the confusion!

Hi, I had a working diagnosis for a few years, which changed to a 95% sure PPMS one.

Then it changed completely to something other than MS.

But there are lesions on your MRI, so it sounds like it IS MS.

As Rizzo says, see what your letter says and then ask your MS nurse, yeh?
