What if...

MS Society

What changes would you like to see to help improve work life?

I asked my MP to support the petition and he replied, "As a member of the government, I cannot endorse any third party campaigns on issues outside my own areas of responsibility, I’m afraid. "

I’d love to know what his responsibilities are because I don’t understand, how as his job at the Ministry of Transport, conflicts with my MS.

Sigh,

I once asked my MP of the time, Jacqui Smith, to support a disability-related motion. She was Home Secretary at the time and I got the same kind of response. Apparently government ministers of any kind are not allowed to give support to any motions, even when requested by their constituents. The best she could do was pass my concerns to a colleague in the relevant ministry.

I know that Home Secretary is a very public office so I should have been aware of her posting, but there are lots of other positions that aren’t in the news so much. Most people won’t know if their MP is a minister, never mind the rules about supporting motions. It has made me dubious about the effectiveness of asking my MP to do anything. (The fact that I didn’t vote for him is beside the point.)

Agreed - That’s a frustrating response but with continued support towards the campaign and the petition, we’re making positive steps. Let’s maintain this momentum to ensure that MPs must at least acknowledge our campaign.

My MP is a junior minister (Northern Ireland Office - just the place for an ex Navy surgeon and ex GP).

His response to anything was exactly what Conservative Central Office told him to say.
Like: he denied that there was any privatisation of the NHS. He is an MP in the South West.
In the South West, one company (Care UK) OWNS every NHS Care Centre

Two of us compared responses from our respective MPs a few years ago (forget what the issue was),
Word for word identical.

I guess that if you are in a marginal constituency, any MP will act.
If they are in a safe seat - they blindly follow the party line. One exception:
I wish Frank Field was my MP.
