Hiya
I’m f36yo and I am currently waiting to see a Neurologist. Apparently it’s a 42 week wait! I went to the GP with some Strange symptoms, such as weakness and strange sensations in hands and legs/feet, so he referred me urgently to check for MS.
Well since then I have had some strange symptoms where my head will just start nodding or shaking. This was happening only in the day, but now it’s also happening at night, but is accompanied with some weird grey vision and patterns for about 10 minutes. I saw a lady at the opticians who said that there is no detachment or pressure in the eyes and said it must be neurological. She said she will write to my GP to see if I can at least get a scan of my head and neck in the meantime.
I guess I wanted to see if anyone else has this symptom. To me it doesn’t sound like MS, but then I only know one person with it. (My sister). I take Propanalol and sertraline for anxiety and my blood pressure and heart rate are good, so I don’t think it is anxiety causing this.
Could anyone help?
Thank you.
Hi ellieyoung. I’ve got ms like, I’m presuming everyone else here has too. I had an uncle who had Parkinson’s disease and some symptoms are common to both. I mentioned Parkinson’s because he used to shake. Quite violently at times. I don’t ever recall his head shaking but, that’s not to say that it never happened. The waiting can be worrying at times especially when they tell you it’s as long as they have. All we can do is try to find something else to occupy our mind and time. It’s very easy to say, I know. And whether you do end up with a diagnosis of ms like your sister or something else, try to remain as positive as possible. There’s lots of new treatments and drugs that help people now. Wishing you all the best for whatever lays ahead for you. Hopefully your opticians letter to your GP will enable you to get a MRI scan of your head and neck at least.
I haven’t experienced those particular symptoms. In terms of getting an appointment with a neurologist I believe that if you have had to wait more than 18 weeks you can ask to be referred to another hospital or health board. Not quite sure of the processes but a 42 week wait is ,not acceptable. Try speaking with your GP about speeding things up and getting referred elsewhere
Not a symptom I’ve had, but no one has them all….
I am really sorry about that horrible long wait. I hope that the optometrist gets somewhere with the GP. One thought: district hospitals generally have emergency ophthalmology clinics (I have been referred a couple of times myself with what turned out to be MS stuff, and once the hospital specialist ophthalmologists get interested in you, things can start happening pretty fast. You might like to have a chat with your GP about that option - the GP can refer you and you’ll get seen fast. (Those clinics are quick because they do deal with sight-threatening things like retinal detachments so you might as well make the most of the part of the NHS that still moves fast. )
Thank you for your reply. I asked my GP for an MRI but unfortunately he cannot request it, it has to come from Neurology, but he did request a CT just to rule out anything more sinister in the meantime.
Hiya, thanks for your reply. I did actually see an Ophthalmologist last year after being referred to them by the Optician. They were worried about blurring on my optic discs, but the hospital were very thorough and said it seems I have small and tilted discs. I was meant to have a 6 month follow up, but I think I got lost in the system. I actually never chased it up as I was ok, but I think I might phone them and see about an appointment. I had my eyes looked at recently at the opticians, and there is no detachment or anything, which is good. The GP has kindly Sorted a CT scan out seeing as he can’t arrange a MRI, but that’s just to rule out sinister things, it won’t look for MS.
