Following on from Karen’s thread about Vitamin D, I am now concerned about giving my children Vit D. I am being tested every 8 weeks at the moment, but obviously, the children aren’t, as it was my choice to give it to them. I have been giving them the 1,200iu softgels from Amazon…could anyone tell me if this is a safe amount to give them or point me in the direction of some reliable information, so I can make a decision please?
There are various websites that offer info about D3, e.g. vitamindcouncil, vitamind3uk. Unfortunately, these are the same websites that say that 10,000iu is fine for adults and it prove not to be, for me at least. I have a feeling that my error was continuing to take the supplements over the summer, despite getting some sun, so it was just too much, but there’s no way of knowing for sure
I’m thinking of buying some home tests (you can buy them on-line) to test my husband and son, both of whom have been taking 5,000iu most days) and to keep an eye on my own levels, so that might be an option for you. I don’t know how sensitive these are though, so it might be best to ask the GP to test them. If everything’s all right, then you know it is safe during the darker months at least. Then perhaps cut back in the summer if the children are out doors most days?
I realise it might be an awkward conversation with the GP, but there is overwhelming evidence that vitamin D is associated with the development of MS. That, plus the increased risks of getting MS if you have a parent with it, would be enough for most sensible MSers to give their children supplements.
I will look into the home testing…maybe if we are being tested regularly and test ourselves too, we can compare and see how accurate the tests are? Maybe I will just give it them in the winter as, they are outdoors a lot in the summer and I don’t put sun cream on them, as they are allergic to it…never thought I would be able to turn that one around into a positive .
I asked my GP about it only last week, he’s usually very good, but admitted he didn’t know enough about why they should take it because I have MS and told me to ask my MS nurse.
