Vit d3 for your children?

Hi,

There was one question I have been wanting to ask for a long time. I have a seven year old daughter. Should she take vit d3 and if so, how much? My Dr wasn’t too forthcoming.

Thanks,

Adrian

I would, if I were you.

Low levels of vitamin D3 is believed to be a factor in developing MS. It’s the only one that parents can directly influence, so it seems daft not to do what we can to prevent it.

According to the vitamindcouncil website:

  • Healthy children under the age of 1 years – 1,000 IU.
  • Healthy children over the age of 1 years – 1,000 IU per every 25 lbs of body weight.
  • Healthy adults and adolescents – at least 5,000 IU.
  • Pregnant and lactating mothers - at least 6,000 IU.

If I could go back in time, I would make my mother give me D3 supplements and I would persuade my young, foolish self to never smoke. Not sure I would manage not catching the Epstein Barr virus, but maybe the first two would have been enough to prevent MS. Who knows.

Thanks Karen. Appreciate that. Yeh, I smoked like a trooper and I drank like a Welshman. Oh well, don’t do either now.

Wish I had stopped a lot sooner too. I think my family is predisposed as my niece has a form of rickets. The two mutant genes are meant to be related.

Thanks, I’ll be getting my little girl some asap then. x

I just recently diagnosed and one of the first things I did was start both my kids on vit d3 supplements. Hopefully it will lessen their risk of devloping ms in the future.

Can i ask what you give them ie. Brand as I haven’t found ‘kid’ ones with high enough d3 content. I have tried giving mine the zmall gel capsules I take but they are so used to flavoured fish oil etc. they bit in, grimaced and refused since then.

I’ve been looking for kids friendly ones too! My daughter who is 14 is fine taking tablets now but my 9 year old son will not let them near his mouth. I got myself some in Holland & Barratts but they are quite big and not a very high a dose. Ideally a liquid would be better for my son but I haven’t found it yet.

I was looking yesterday for my children. On Amazon search chewable vit D3 1000iu. Came up with couple but I can’t say whether they are any good or not. Carolyne.

I’ve been giving my two 1200iu soft gel caps by healthy origins from amazon. They are such good value for money. less than a tenner for 360 caps.

They don’t have any problem taking them. They have literally no taste and are so small they’re down and swallowed before they know it.

Well worth having a look at.

I tried to get my kids (13 and 8yrs) to take the softgels but they wouldn’t take them.

I had to resort to plan B. So i pierce the softgel with a pin or scissors and squirt it onto their food. They have no idea!

I give them 1000iu but i take 5000iu myself.

Hope that helps.

Aha! Stealth health I like it. Bedtime hot choccie laced with D3! I’ll sneak it in…

Hi Vicer and all those looking for a liquid D3; Pure Encapsulations do one, http://www.purebio.co.uk/shop/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=2998

I’ve had it before and take other PE products - they’re American and expensive but very good quality.

Hope that helps.
