Hi, just had some blood tests unrelated to MS but my GP has msgd to say stop taking Vitamin D as my results are too high. I’ve looked online & it shows 225.
A quick Google says this high is Vit D Toxicity & i certainly have a lot of the side effects it lists
However im a but confused as I thought we were meant to take much higher levels for MS but I can’t find any info saying if its OK for our blood results to be over the norm….
This is the view of the Professor of neurology at Barts.
“In the past, I have advised my patients to ensure they are vitamin D replete; with the aim of having a plasma level of 25OH-vD3 of greater than 100 nmol/L and less than 250 nmol/L.”
You only need to have the normal level of vitamin D maybe slightly over but how much were you taking? Its not good to have toxicity. SO I would stop taking the supplements and talk to the doctor and ask what you should be taking.
300- 4000 units per day
Note that taking Vitamin D with food enhances absorption. Note that the American Academy of Neurology multiple sclerosis subcommittee recently reviewed literature on Vitamin D deficiency and MS and recommended a wide range of doses from 300- 4000 units per day of Vitamin D3.
its always best to talk to doctor before taking extra supplements. x
Hello. Can I ask how much vitamin D you were taking? And was it with k2. It is something I wonder about as vitamin D testing isn’t done routinely anymore and always feel as though I would get short shrift if I ever asked the GP to do it.
