Hi all I have just got an appointment through for next Monday to see a urologist and have this test , as anyone else had this done and is it really necessary to determine if I need to self catheter as they don’t think I am emptying my bladder. It does sound a bit uncomfortable and I am not looking forward to having it done. Any advice would be welcome, thanks Karen x
Hi Karen I had this test before I was given Botox into the bladder and yes it is uncomfortable but more embarrasssing than anything so prepare to put your dignity aside for an hour or so. I didn’t have to learn to self catheterise as it happened but my second lot of Botox last year didn’t work as well so I am now waiting for an appointment with a continence nurse to learn how to do it and although it daunts me a bit I think isc will be my best option. Good luck with your appointment.
Hi Karen, I have had this too and as Susie says you lose your dignity but it is worth it if they pinpoint your problem. I started self-catheterisation in September after being shown how by the continence nurse. I can easily say that it has been a wonderful life-changing event. My bladder problems were causing me endless UTIs, lengthy stays in the loo and from constant standing up and down, terrible pains in my quad muscles. I was also feeling pretty depressed. I am like a new woman now! Please don’t worry about it. It is wonderful! Teresa xx
Hi Susie and Teresa thank you so much I will grit my teeth and get on with it, anything is better than constant uit’s and always being on the loo. Thanks again Karen x
Hi Karen, I had this test over 12 years ago, and its a little uncomfortable but not painfull and yes leave your dignity at home.
You will be fine dear. Iv been self catheterising since then because i dont empty my bladder, and once you get the hang of it its really quite easy and soon becomes part of your regular toilet routine. Try not worry sunshine

Hi Karen
I refused this test last year.
I was having similar problems as yourself.
I discussed it with my doctor and the urologist and both agreed that the problems that I was having where down to MS.
The outcome would be the same wether I had the test or not, I would need a catheter either supapubic or do it myself.
So in all honesty there was no real need for the test after looking at the outcome.
I also had a difference of oppinion with them and there facilities for people in wheelchairs and the fact that they had no male nurses in that department, which I know that lots of people wll think that is pettie and just get on with it.
If you have any doubts discuss it with your doctor.
I know that this is a bit negative and I don’t mean to put you of what could be quite necassary but to me it would be an horrendous ordeal.

Well I had it done today and it wasn’t too bad at all, I am going to have to self catheter so just waiting for a appointment to show me how to. Thanks for your replies. Karen x
Hi Karen Glad you didn’t find it too bad. Good news re: the catheters! I thought I would hate it so much but as I said before, it was liberating! I find the whole process easy to do and once you get the hang of it. You will too. Good luck, Teresa xx
