Trigeminal neuralgia, MS hug, or something else?

I’ve got a bit of an odd symptom that I’m struggling to find any information about, just wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar. Every so often I get a sharp pain in my ears and jaw, it then radiates down my back and I get a squeezing sensation between my shoulder blades. Sometimes it lasts just a few seconds, sometimes minutes, longest it’s ever stayed is about half an hour or so.

I’m not yet diagnosed with RRMS, had an MRI recently that showed signs consistent with MS but I’m still waiting to see a neurologist. So I’ve been trying to make a note of symptoms I’ve experienced that could be related, I’m just not sure if this is or not.

From googling these symptoms, the ear and jaw pain seems like it could be trigeminal neuralgia, and descriptions I’ve read of the “MS hug” sound similar to the squeezing pain in my chest. Bit I’ve not come across anything suggesting it’s usual to have both together?

They do always come together, I don’t think I’ve ever had one without the other, although sometimes one is worse than the other.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? Or heard of these symptoms appearing together?

Your symptoms could be a mix of trigeminal neuralgia and an MS hug, but since they always occur together, it might be worth discussing with a neurologist to see if they’re connected or something else entirely.

Hi Woodsie, I’ve had trigeminal neuralgia and a period of MS hugs but not at the same time or same period. Trigeminal neuralgia was incredibly painful running down one side of my face into my jaw like a sudden bolt of severe pain. The MS hug was far easier to tolerate - a tight hug across my abdomen and lower chest. Didn’t enjoy it but it was tolerable
