Not sure if anyone else watches these re-runs… but today’s was particularly interesting. They had a guy who was mugging people in wheelchairs, so Cagney had to go undercover as a wheelchair user to try and catch him. While doing so, she got involved with a man in a wheelchair. Highlighted some issues really well… the problems she had with kerbs, using a public telephone, people ignoring her or patronising her. And then her dilemma of whether to get romantically/sexually involved with a wheelchair user. Very well done… although of course it was made in the 80’s and I’m sure New York is more wheelchair accessable now. Watch in on iplayer… it’s worth watching. Oh one other thing… after a day in a wheelchair she told the guy that she had a headache and he said it’s from always having to look up all the time, creates tension in your neck. Useful fact. Pat xx
Hello Pat, it’s surprising where these issues crop up. Ironside never complained of a headache! “The Bill” in the mid nineties (before it got silly) used to highlight a number of social issues and the conundrums they created. One particular episode featured a very angry ex-policeman with MS, and how he felt both patronised and neglected. It would be interesting to see how New York has changed, if at all. Thankfully I’ve not had to put up with too much ignorance on my wheelchair adventures-I always say it’s because my wife is stunningly attractive and acts as a good decoy.
