I enjoyed my mums day meal out yesterday, but felt really uncomfortably full.............that was the latte I think, which tipped the scales....when you know youve had enough already…I passed on the cheese and biscuits.
We came back to ours and they enjoyed hubby`s treacle/chocolate cake and fudge…oh…I didnt…partake.
When they`d left I got hubby to put me to bed…to stretch out…I changed from day urine bag to night one and then…whoa…blood was running through the tube…quite a lot of it…hubby panicked and said to ring someone. I wanted to drink more water and see what happened…more blood…
I rang the emergency district nurse number. Within 4 mins a nurse arrived…quicker than an ambulance…luckily she was one of my regulars…she did a bladder wash out and said it could be either a blood clot or a uti and asked i I had tugged the pipe or felt unwell. The answer to both was no.
I drank lots of water and it took about 3 hours to come clear again. We did see stringy bits of blood in the bag.
Anyway, it`s fine today, but scared us.
I am due a catheter change next week…6 weeks as per norm.
But when nurse put last one in, she did say mine doesnt go in very far…never heard that before…mmm?
Since having this current cath, Ive not been comfy much and had pressure, floods and spasms. Ive put mself back on 10mg oxybutynin a day.
With 20mg, I lost my voice and had a really dry throat. Better now on 10g.
I was looking forward to hearing wonderful about your special Mothers day treat. I’m so sorry it all folded into a medical mayhem. Can’t your body just leave you alone for two minutes? If I was there with you, I’d be telling it off. I’m so glad all was well in the end though.
Maybe you and your poor hubby can have a calm relaxing day, cuddle up and enjoy his treacle chocolate fudge cake, to make up for yesterday.
Oh Poll, what an awful thing to happen, so sorry to hear. I do hope things are better for you and G today, you both have been through so much lately, I wish I was not so far away, I would come and give you both a hug.
Take care and I hope today is a lot less eventful.
Oh Poll that’s not how your special day was supposed to end! I’m glad things are better for you today.
If my husband read this he’d probably tell me to increase my dose of oxybutynin from 10 mg to 20 mg in the hope that my voice would go too! As I tell him it’s good to talk!
It`s all ok again now. but I am taking it even more steadily. Not doing a thing, except getting a shower and sitting in recliner all day, with my glam foot straightening splint boots on…yeh, dead glam I am…complete with pink nightie, lilac bed jacket and red fleece blanket.
I can stretch my tum out a bit…eee, when in wheelie, my innards are all quashed up…poor catheter…how it drains I dont know…such a tiny hole does the job…under all this flab…chuffin` chuff!

Poll, lf the catheter balloon has been inserted TOO far in - it can press against the uretha- cause pain and irritation which will result in it bleeding. l have had this problem in the past. l watch very carefully how far the district nurse inserts the new cath before inflating it. lf l do feel it is in too far - l just gently ease it back out. The ideal way - when they insert a replacement cath - is too make sure the drainage bag is connected first - then slowly insert until you can see the urine passing into bag. Then you know it is in place and working before inflating the balloon. Make sure you drink plently before they attempt to do the change - so you know you have urine to pass through. A catheter pushed in too far can actually block the uretha - and that is painful. Also, if you don’t occasionally give it a few turns - the balloon can adhere to the bladder wall. The little holes become blocked and you will ‘by-pass’ and wet yourself. And of course the bladder easily bleeds.
You may find you will be better with it changed more often - l am on every 5weeks. Actually, the last time l had it changed the nurse - a new one to me - did say - l hope you regularlly give it a turn to stop it getting stuck.
Hope this helps - as you know - l have been there - done that!! Just when you are feeling confident with it - and enjoying a ‘dry life’ - another snag appears to knock your confidence. ln my experience it is always when l am out somewhere special - all dressed up - only to end up with a soaked lap.
