Symptoms

Hi ya I have been to see an Neurologist and had an MRI, he said I have memory loss but I still have to be diagnosed, I have the following symptoms and wonder if they are familiar to those who are diagnosed, I feel like I have been given a pre med and will drop off to sleep even though I have had a good nights sleep, feel like I have insects crawling over my face and now on sole of foot, when it first started I thought there were mites nesting in my eyebrows and shaved them off, other times my face arms and back of hands are on fire and my face is red my balance is wonky sometimes when I wake my head is spinning other times when standing I feel like I am getting pulled towards the ground, I have problems swallowing my tongue tingles underneath and the back of my throat feels as if it has lifted up, Im now getting that if I burp food comes back up, I have rotten headaches and pain in lower back and neck and shoulders, symptoms of IBS and when passing a stool I get some through then a spasm blocks the rest, I get what I describe as a shock wave of pain which travels round from my spine just under my ribs and makes it hard to breathe, I have been tested for Lupus and Sjorgerns but results are negative so I am hoping that this MRI will come up with something but the only problem is I had a hip replacement and they could not do my spine and I wonder if this will make it harder to diagnose forgot to say I do daft things as well like putting the teapot in the fridge and orange juice in my cornflakes, I had a motorbike crash in 1975 and fractured my femure and compound tibia and fibula and my crash helmet looked like it had been clawed down the back, could this have caused damage to my brain, sorry for such a long story but this is driving me bonkers with symptoms changing and not knowing what I am going to wake up to next, thank you in advance

Hi Dinky,

Yes the symptoms you describe do sound Neurological; not necessarily MS.

The pain you get in your ribs sounds like ‘The Hug’;

MS hug or girdle effect

Why does MS cause the hug or girdle effect?
This is a spasm-type symptom that is one of the more unusual effects of MS. Between each of our ribs are tiny muscles called intercostal muscles. These hold the ribs in place but provide flexibility at the same time. If these muscles go into spasm, the result can be uncomfortable or painful. This is sometimes referred to as ‘banding’.

Effects
People with this symptom of MS describe a burning or tight sensation which spreads around the rib cage, causing a crushing feeling that can range from uncomfortable to very painful. Sometimes it is accompanied by pins and needles. Most commonly felt around the ribs, occasionally the effect is experienced in the hands or feet.

Treatments
Individuals with MS who experience the hug or girdle effect do not always have the same degree of intensity of pain. For some, it is no more than an uncomfortable feeling, which passes without the need for any treatment. Others, however, need pain relief to deal with the spasm. Analgesic cream, warmth and painkillers are all used to provide relief. Your medical professional will discuss how best to manage your pain and will bear in mind any other drugs you are taking

The headaches you get are poignant. Yes; MS does cause headaches but they are worse and can be constant with http://www.hughes-syndrome.org/ otherwise symptoms mimic MS.

Ask your GP to do a blood test.
