Supplements & vitamins

Thought I would raise a post about supplements and vitamins to see what everyone takes as its quite an interesting subject how many people take different things. Up until last year I only took a multivitamin and that was it - now I rattle! I take a fair amount of supplements but can honestly say that I think some of then make a difference not only to general function but my nails have never been this long an my hair has never been so shiny!

Hi Karina, I take vit D3, cranberry soft gels and evening primrose oil soft gels. The first two are for MS - the other one is for cyclical breast pain but I think may also be beneficial for MS? Teresa xx

I take 10,000iu vitamin d3 twice a week, 2 evening primrose oil capsules every day, 2 flaxseed oil capsules every day, one folic acid tablet a day, 2 ginkgo biloba tablets a day, 2 magnesium and zinc tablets a day, one vitamin b complex tablet a day, one iron tablet a day, one ginseng tablet a day, two pomegranate tablets a day and also a vitamin b12 injection every month! The flaxseed oil is amazing stuff - cant take the fish oil as allergic to fish. My hair since being on the flaxseed oil is really shiny and my nails have never grown this long in my life!! Amazing stuff!

I used to take a vitamin c supplement and garlic supplement a day but was advised off them as they are both immune system support tablets so therefore can cause havoc with symptoms

Could you elaborate and say what you are taking each one for and if you think they are doing any good.
Don’t bother with the D3, I think it is common knowledge that it is good for helping to ward off MS, though what the benefits for us that have it, I am not so sure.
I still take 5000iu of it every day on my neuros advice.

I take 100mcg B12 (it might help, and it won’t do me any harm), calcium (low levels ongoing plus osteoporosis in the family), omega 3 (doesn’t do anything for MS apparently, but may help with cognition so I take it just in case) and 400mg B2 (for migraine prevention, on recommendation of migraine specialist neuro). I also take cranberry capsules occasionally.

I was taking 10,000iu D3 four days and 5,000iu three days a week. As most of you know, I’ve stopped temporarily to get my levels down to 150nmol/l. What I take then, I have no idea. Trial and error ahead I think.

Interesting about the flaxseed oil - I might try that - my nails are terrible just now :frowning:

Hi Karina,

I’ve been taking a lot of things since I’ve been diagnosed, to see if any make a particular difference. I used to take a rediculous amount of supplements but the following are what I have stuck with most days…

Vit D3. 5000IU/day. Used to take 50000IU/day but my joints started cracking so I stopped lol.

L-Glutamine, to protect the gut (apparently). Mainly still taking it because it increases my concentration!

Flaxseed oil, as it apparently helps the mylin sheathes redevelop.

Alpha-lipoic acid, a highly potent antioxidant to hopefully clear my blood of harmful free-radicals.

One of the things I stopped taking was vit B-12, as although it is supposed to have benefits for MS sufferers, it just made me feel drunk.

There we have it. My approach was quite cavalier but I felt I had nothing to lose and received no (still no) real help from the NHS or anything. Hopefully there are some gems there though. I seem to get a boost after I have taken them.

I’ll also mention, it is equally, if not more important that you remove from your diet anything you might have some kind of intolerance to. That’s not always easy to work out but you should definitely do it. After much experimentation with diet I have found I feel better when I don’t take gluten, and some also feel better when they remove dairy. Whatever works for you, but hopefully this helps a little. If your nails are longer and hair shinyer then you must be on to something good though!

I take the vitamin d3 on advice of my neurologist who said that its important to keep the levels up as having low vitamin d can contribute towards relapses and also length of relapses apparently (not sure how accurate this is but he’s a too consultant so it mus have some clout behind it). I take the flaxseed oil for the omega 3,6&9 which helps towards general brain development and bones and muscles. I’m on the vitamin b12 injections as my levels were low and also apparently it helps towards rebuilding damaged nerves and myelin sheath and since I started on the vitamin b12 I’ve come off gabapentin as my nerve pain has gone (neuro suspected that it was because the b12 was helping to repair the damaged nerves. I take the folic acid for my liver as vitamin b12 is stored in the liver and folic acid helps it flow better through the body and helps the liver to store a higher amount. Was recommended b complex as I don’t eat fish and certain foods and vitamin b complex is important for general health. I take the magnesium and zinc for general health and brain function and the ginkgo biloba for brain health especially to help with memory function. Ginseng and iron as it helps with fatigue. Evening primrose is a natural pain reliving medication and helps with cell structure and nerve damage and joint pain. And I take the pomegranate capsules as it helps to prevent certain types of cancer and helps with the heart and helps with reducing cholesterol. Hope this explanation helps for why I talk each one

Not sure why that posted anon!
