Stiffness?

Hi All,

Hope you are all well?

For a while now i’ve been getting leg twitches where my leg will fly off in all directions whatever I am doing causing me to fall etc especially funny when I’m in the cinema or out to lunch lol  Now suffereing from what I can only describe as stiffness in my calf muscles and down to my ankles, I have been using a muscle stimulator fro suspected dropped foot on the right but this is affecting both? Any ideas is it my MS or do I need to start oiling my joints?

Thanks

Becksie xx

Hi Becksie,

One of the most common symptoms of MS I’m afraid - also known as spasticity.

For mild cases, stretching exercises may help, but if it’s quite severe, you might need the help of a prescription muscle-relaxant such as Baclofen.

Hello Becksie,

Oiling the joints does not do anyone any harm, nowadays I find it essential when I wake up in the morning. Talk to MS Nurse and they will make some suggestions. Try to get into the habit every day. Also doing the stretches helps to keep the co-ordination. Suppose it is a bit like Pilates

Baclofen will help with stiffness & spasticity but some muscle stretches are always sensible. Whilst drugs help to relieve the symptoms I think it is a good idea that you make a positive effort to keep yourself supple and able to do things yourself.

I’m sure taking physical exercise when ever possible has helped to keep the MS at bay for that little bit longer.

Incidentally if you have foot drop foot then take a look at the Musmate. I talk about it on my website, www.aid4disabled.com and see http://www.mssociety.org.uk/forum/everyday-living/musmate-vs-foot-orthosis. Well worth looking into
