Spasms? or pulled muscle?

Hi lurk here now and then and on the whole bob along with manageable symptoms that occasionally rear their head 9fatigue,random pains ,numbness ,going brain dead)so prob can’t complain that much.

Thing is since last week (wed approx)Have been getting muscle spasm in right side.Gets bad enough sometimes that can’t lift a kettle, work computer etc. As I am right handed it does interfere with quite a lot. Its not agonising pain but enough that you say no can’t do that.It feels like I’m holding my breath and it really tiring me out.

Only comes into play when I actually do something. Have been signed off for week to rest ( I teach Manual Handling to community carers ) but I can lie on my back/front for ages with no ill effect but sitting/standing doing something it starts to feel heavy and starts random spasms.

Oh and it started out nearer side now nearer spine and get that thick numb tingly feeling.Feel likeI’ve giot a cushion up my back at right side

So suppose what want to know what folks thoughts are MS or pulled muscle. Anyone else had this?

Hi Gladys,

What I’m going to say may confuse rather than clarify, but I don’t think the two are mutually exclusive.

I get so-called “pulled muscles” all the time - and did for some years prior to diagnosis, too. But it’s not just coincidence, it’s because of the MS.

If you have abnormal muscle tone, stiffness, weakness etc. etc, it’s much more likely you will get injuries.

I should have realised something was wrong, when I inexplicably pulled a hamstring, whilst getting up from the couch to answer the phone!

I knew something had torn, because I heard - or was it felt? - a sort of popping or pinging, and next day it was black and blue, and many other shades besides. I went to the doctor, and said: “I think I’ve pulled a muscle”, and she took one look, and said: “Oh dear, yes you have, haven’t you?”

It was a great mystery, at the time, how a couch potato like me could manage to pull a hamstring just answering the phone. But now I know what was causing all the stupid injuries - my muscles weren’t right, because I was already ill.

Thanks for reply.

I initially thought just pulled muscle as believe can’t blame everything on the MS but now thinking MS as can do things one minute then the next it sets off a spasm.

Dr couldnt find a knot or anything so just said what do you want to do? Well give me something that means I can function!

Do understand what your saying about MS. Its indirectly causing the muscle damage.

Will see how it is at end of week as due back Frid.

Was hoping for a sick leave free year in 2013!!
