Sister act!

Hi, my sis is in hospital and I’m really worried about her. About 6 years ago she had spinal fusion op. She had been having serious back pain which wasn’t investigated fully for ages and it turned to be a fracture…7 years she’d had it!

She was changing her bedding 2 weeks ago and twisted her back. Ever since she has been in severe pain. No painkillers would touch it. This morning she was dragging her leg and lost all bladder control. She went to her gp and he sent her to A & E.

They suspected something we’d never heard of…cauda equine! Might not have spelt it right!

It is very serious and can cause paralysis if not treated urgently.

This afternoon she had an MRI with contrast.

Scary, innit?

Pollx

Sis is home and has just rung me. She will probably have to have another spinal op…waiting for asap date. She is totally dreading it, as it was so painful before. But I doubt she has any choice in an effort to save her mobility…poor lass!

Nite all.

Pollx

How awful I hope that there’s some clarity after the test and that she at least has some improvement.

Oh Poll so sorry to hear this, wishing your Sister all the very best and a quick recovery.

Let us know how she gets on, and do try not to get stressed, although I appreciate that is easier said than done.

((((hugs))))

Sorry to hear this Poll. Hope she gets her op soon and is on her way to recovery. Anne X

Thank you everyone for your replies and kind words.

Me and big sis went to see middle sis yesterday.

She is now able to stand and walk and tad. But she is in a lot of pain.

The hospital said it isnt that equine thing…thank heavens!

She has a protruding disc and degeneration of the area.

She has to see a spine specialist and a urologist. They are trying to get urgent appointments for her.

She may have to have an operation…dont know yet!

pollxx

Fingers crossed the appointments come thru nice and quick. Also that she gets some good pain relief

Sonia x

Hugs for you and her plus big sis as well just to be seen as being unbiased

Backs are awful things and so painful I hope she gets it sorted. XXX Don

Ah Pol, I’m SO sorry to read about your sisters plight and the anxiety you are having. It’s good it’s not what the hospital first thought. A protruding disc is hell on earth pain, it could be aggravating the nerves which can make the muscle spasm Aaaagh…

My heart goes out to your sister in agony and to you & your elder sister for the worry and concern. Great to read the docs are trying to rush appointments through. (((hugs)) to all.

Hi and thanks so much for your concern.

Sis is still in a massive amount of pain and hasn’t heard about any ‘urgent’ appointments as yet.

Yesterday she asked me if I thought she might have what I have ie HSP?

Well I doubt it very much, mainly because her problems have been seen on MRI and x-ray.

Nothing has ever been seen on mine.

Dunno if I told you, but after 5 years of shall I/shan’t I…I did decide to go for genetic testing, to see if they can find the faulty gene which caused hsp.

There is a possibility that the test will come back negative. But that is no surety as they can’t and often don’t, find that pesky gene.

Pollx

Hi Poll x, I’ve no idea what hsp is but if it is genetic then, like MS, let’s hope the research is funded to find the genes. I always feel for anyone in pain, it took years for me to get the right gp with sufficient knowledge & right meds.

As for sisters urgent need, has she tried phoning the consultants secretary? Keep at 'em to chase things up, literally phone every 2 days.

Chrissie x

Big hugs to your sister Poll. ((((((((x)))))))))). My dad used to have dreadful back pain He’s ok now but it was heart breaking to see him in so much pain. And he still went out to the factory every day.

Thanks again, for everyone`s concern.

Sis has been put on gabapentin for the back pain and it has eased a tiny bit.

Her gp has chased up her hospital appointment, but she`s still waiting.

Hi Poll

I am glad they have given your sister some meds for symptom relief, hopefully her appointment will arrive shortly.
