Hi Everyone. I got diagnosed in late August 2016 with rrms. I am 25 and i am and always will be a total horse daft person. I just wondered if anyone else on here is also a showjumper? If you are do you have to confirm that you have ms when you compete? Im just starting to regain my showjumping after having to basically fully relearn how to ride ( my balance got shot to shreads ) I hear quite a bit about dressage and MS but never anything about showjumping, so any advice or information would be very much appriciated
Thanks Fee x
I guess it depends how your MS affects you at any giving time. I have a horse. I ride most days, hack and school mostly but that’s because I’m a wimp when it comes to jumping! I am however doing novice arena eventing next month . I don’t think you have to disclose your medical history to compete, Not happened to me anyway at the level I compete at.
As @hamburg noticed, depends how MS affects you. I was diagnosed with rrms 9 years ago, I am riding horses since 5 or 6 years so far. 2 years ago I decide to buy my own horse, and we are doing some showjumping (just for fun). Last summer was for us difficult (weak legs syndrome), but we managed For far future I plan to switch for dressage with my horse.
Hope the best for you!
Fee, I do not know the rules or regs but I would think that we would all be smart enough not to put ourselves or others at risk. Clearly if you are suffering frequent rapid relapses related to any chosen activity you should consider the risks.
When I had RRMS and was well I used to ride motorcycles , ski , swim , play squash etc but I tried to be aware and cautious to avoid any problem. My reasoning was that I did (do) not want to be told “I must stop” or end up in court or hospital because I did my activity inconsiderately and I would have been mortified if my inconsiderate activity caused consequent injury or distress to others.
So my advise (for what it’s worth) is do stuff while you can but be considerate and kind to both yourself and others. (Sometimes “others” are friends and loved ones who get stressed or scared on our behalf)
All the best Mick
I ride but not a great jumper … hope you don’t mind my tagging on to your post … just has dvla revoke my licence for a medical one and they have taken my class c1 off me so I can’t drive a horse box anymore … but do any of you know if that impacts on towing my trailer ? Be really stuck if I couldn’t take the boys out in it as we live miles from anywhere …
I’m not yet diagnosed but I am.horse daft and do some show jumping and eventing. It never even crossed my mind that I would have to disclose any health issues/ diagnosis when I competed. I would be absolutely devastated if I could no longer get out and about with my boy.
