Shingrix vaccination

Hello everyone

While I was having my Covid and flu vaccinations last Sunday. The nurse and I have been talking about vaccinations and that we, MS’ers can’t have any live vaccinations.
Somehow we started to talk about shingles and I have been told (and verified by later research) that I should be requesting Shingrix as not live vaccine taking into account I have MS.
I’m 56, so not at the age the shingle vaccination is being normally offered. I was wondering if there is anyone with MS who has received Shingrix and if there is something to be worried about like unusual side effects, please.
Thank you and have a nice day

I had my first Shingles vaccine after the nurse at my GP surgery let me know that I was eligible due to having MS.
I had no side effects and I’m due to have my second vaccine in February.
They need to be 6mths apart.
I’ve also had Flu , Pneumonia and Covid 19 vaccines.
All were fine other than the Covid 19 booster which I did feel ill after.
It wouldn’t put me off having them all again.
I had a friend who unfortunately passed away recently as she had Pneumonia and then had sepsis. I specifically asked for the Pneumonia jab because of this.

Hi claret57,
I’m so glad Gemini brought this subject to light, as I din’t know about these vaccines, I’ve got SPMS, I had shingles a couple of years ago and was hospital for 6 days this year with double pneumonia, so I will certainly be getting in touch with my surgery to see if they are doing these vaccinations.

This is from the NHS site.

“The shingles vaccine helps protect against shingles. It’s recommended for all adults turning 65, those aged 70 to 79 and those aged 50 and over with a severely weakened immune system.”

Thanks whammel, I’ve had shingles and I turn 66 in March, so should fit the remit.

Hi Gemini,
Thank you for putting this post on and thank you for those that replied, I’ve just booked with my surgery for both of this vaccines, as I’ve had both and don’t want them again, apparently I was on their list to ring anyway.

Thanks again and take care,

Hi Everyone

Thank you all for your experience and comments on the matter. I’ll be ringing our GP practice to see if I can arrange to have them both in a couple weeks time to have a bit of break between the Covid and flu jabs last Sunday.

Best wishes to All

Hi All,

I hope you managing as well as possible in this viruses ridden season.

I’ve contacted my GP practice to get booked for non-live shingles vaccination to be told to wait till I’m 70 which is more than decade away.

I’m having my 6-months review with my MS nurse mid-Feb so I will take it up with her as my email has not been replied to by my nurse or the MS team in the hospital I go for my check up. It will be interesting to hear what my nurse will have to say.

Maybe it’s not for everyone with MS.

Bad enough that my annual flu jab is not that apparently effected because I’m taking Copaxone. That’s what I’ve read.

Best regards

I’m having mine in a few weeks. I’m on Tecfidera. Only requirement is that is a deactivated vaccine, which the hospital have confirmed it is. Hopefully be no side effects.

Just an update, I had my 2nd dose of the shingles vaccine last week and it knocked me for 6, I only had a sore arm with the 1st round, not the 2nd, I had all the side affects that were listed, lasted 24hrs, horrible, but at least it’s done now.
