Sharp stabbing pain in my lower leg

Hi, I’ve been off work since Tuesday lunchtime (I still work from home) as I felt unwell & unable to concentrate. That evening I started with diahorea. Ah ha, that must have been why I was feeling so rough! But then on Wednesday evening I started getting sharp stabbing pains in my leg, just below my knee on the side and also a bit lower down above my ankle also the pain came while moving and it felt like my leg was about to give way momentarily, but it didn’t.

I often have restless legs and take magnesium, so thinking this was similar I took my tablet but the pains continued until I went to sleep. The next day Thursday, at lunchtime the pains started again getting more severe and with that giving way feeling when the pain hit when I was on my feet in the afternoon again. I called my GP who suggested it could be spasms and has prescribed baclofen - a low dose to start with with a review in a month.

What I want to know is does this sound like MS spasms? I’ve previously had similar pains; but in my head when I was diagnosed and then on and off since then and was treated with amitriptaline/gabapentin on several occasions - I’m now 16 years diagnosed RRMS.

So, does this sound like MS spasms or could it be arthritic type pain? I have OA in my hips but have been told it’s only mild in my stabbing pain leg!

Thanks in advance.

Oh Sharon I hope you feel better soon.
I started on baclofen a few months ago and it has helped the pain in my legs.
I’m not really sure if it helps all, my leg can sometimes still give way but it is a lot better.
Sorry I’m not much help but the great people on here may help with their experience.
Mary

I have pain in my lower legs but it’s spasticity rather than spasms. It’s not a sharp pain, more of an ache that varies in intensity. The physiotherapist I saw a few years ago said that I should go on to Baclofen if the pain got too bad. It’s manageable atm. In my case massaging the leg can help, but I’m not sure that would work with spasms.

Thanks, my previous head stabbing pains were managable for a while until it also affected my speech and movement. Then I was hospitalised for 2 weeks. Since then my head pains when they come have mostly been OK!
My leg pains are so sharp and last just seconds, during the evening last night they got worse.
My head feels fuzzy too. Think I’m going to stay off work until things improve a bit. :disappointed:

Hi Mary,
What we’re your pains like? We’re they stabbing pains? Also what strength are you on? I’ve started at 5mg 3 times a day with a review in a month or earlier if needed with my GP.
Hope you feel better soon x
Sharon

Hi Sharon, It was mainly at night and I could barely touch my legs never mind move them. The pain was bad, I can only say it felt like I should have had bruises all over me but there obviously wasn’t, GP thought it sounded like ms pain, nerves or spasms. Started on Baclofen, 5mg 3 times daily and am now taking 10 mg morning and night and it seems to be working.
Ironically I’m off work just now. Hopefully its all connected to a wee virus I’ve picked (back to school bug I call them).
I’ve always escaped these August bugs but it hit me big time this year. The neuroligist wants and MRI done and I am having it at 7 this evening. Fingers crossed it doesn’t throw up any more wee lesiopns etc and I’ll get to take my next tysabra in 10 days. This MS always keeps reminding us it’s there. Take care. Mary

Ahh, those pesky back to school bugs!

That’s what I started with on Tuesday. I’ve been on Aubagio for almost 5 years and have no changes in my MRI scans, which is good so not sure if this is a relapse or something else!

Good luck with your MRI.

Take care,

Sharon x
