Sent for a contrast MRI a week after normal

Hi everyone!

Tomorrow I will be going for my 3rd MRI in the past month, (brain and upper spine with contrast) my previous one last week was the same with no contrast and my one at the start was just full spine.

I haven’t seen the neurologist since the results of my first whole spine scan where he suggested it could be MS due to a few spine lesions and my overall symptoms. So i’m yet to receive the results from my brain scan last week, I’ve just been sent for another one with contrast and told he will see me once that’s processed.

Just wondering if this happened to anyone else and what that meant if anything? Would they still refer me for a contrast MRI if my initial brain scan was clear?

Thanks so much

Hi Nalalou, looks like your neurologist is being thorough. You haven’t had the results of the brain scan yet, there may be a lesion or lesions present that the neuro wants to check on. The MRI with contrast will highlight which lesions (if any) are active. You should have regular scans going forward to check for new/active lesions.

Your Neurologist will send you for mri with contrast as the dye they use will highlight any lesions, whereas a normal mri wont sure any lesions that are active.
