He’s still a little bit nervous… or course… so I’m just softly talking to him and letting him do his own thing. He was playful for a while and he’s eaten. Not used the litter tray yet but hoping he will tonight.
He was a stray found in Suffolk with his leg badly infected after a dog attacked him. They had to amputate the let (his right hind leg) and he was with a foster mother for a while. He’s very nervous about anything getting close to the stump where his leg was… but it’s early days and I hope he’ll feel safe with me.
Recently he’s moved about a bit in hope of finding him a home. He’s very handsome and has a beautiful coat and big green eyes. He keeps looking at me with such a strange little expression (probably thinking Who is this mad woman who’s talking to me like I’m a baby!!!)
So this is our first night. I’m in bed absolutely exhausted and a bit fragile after all the excitement and emotions around getting permission to have him. He’s asleep on carpet in living room and I’m hoping he’ll come through and get on bed. Left a little stool by the bed in case he needs it (very disabled aware household!).
He looks gorgeous Pat, I bet he’s really happy to have come to live with you… I’m sure that he’ll settle really well and you will have lots of fun times together.
He is gorgeous ! All our cats are rescue cats. The males were always more affectionate we’ve found. … Though the female we have now is getting there. He’s got you wrapped round his paw already !!! They all do
Dickie used his litter tray last night so that was a big relief (for both of us!).
He slept on the sheepskin rug next to my bed but at 6.15 am I felt him finally come onto the bed! He curled up against my legs and went back to sleep.
He picked up a cold at the cat’s home and is still sneezing a lot. They gave me some high vitamin powder to put in his food for a couple of days and he has to see the vet for another vaccination by end of this month, so hoping his cold is cleared up by then.
His favourite activity so far is sitting on the windowsill looking out of the window. Seems amazed by it all.
Not eating much yet! I bought masses of Sheba and Iams for him and I don’t think he’s keen on either!!! Why oh why didn’t I just buy a few different brands? Hey ho…
He got up on the bed…yey! So happy for you both Pat. Sometimes it’s trial and error with their food you know. Albert ate the same food for a year and then turned his nose up at it, but hey, that’s kitties for you.
Enjoy the newness of it all, it sounds like Dickie is
PS The sentence should have read ‘Sometimes it’s trial and error with their food as you know’…it sounded like I was telling a granny how to suck eggs LOL!
I agree with Pam, give him a few days with the food, nerves are sure to play a part in that. He’s very beautiful and I’m glad he found the bed in the end, I hope he gives you some good company
I’m really happy for you Pat. A pet is really good company, and with him being an indoor cat I’m sure you’ll become really close. We don’t have a pet of our own now that the hamster died but we kidnap mum and dad’s dog a lot. It helps mum a lot as dad is really demanding with his MND and we love having him. It’s the best of both worlds really for us - the joy of having him without the expense of vets etc.
So pleased you were given purrmission to have your new friend he sounds just purrfect. I have a 3 legged cat he had cancer when he was 6 and wasn’t meant to survive for more than 6 months but he is now 16 going on 17 and has us well trained. I wouldn’t worry about Dickie it takes time for them to fully settle and with a cold he may not feel like eating much so long as he is peeing and pooing he should be okay. My cat Salem send his regards to another 3 legged friend. Sue
Dickie sounds like a gorgeous cat. For so long I’ve been a fan of female cats but since we’ve had Seymour my mind is shifting. He is just so affectionate.
Hi Stella, it’s so nice to meet someone else with a 3 legged cat!
How is Salem’s walking? I find Dickie is mainly using his front legs and just using the back a bit to push himself along a bit. It’s his right hind leg that’s been amputated.
I wonder if I should try to get the remaining hind leg stronger… maybe play games where he has to jump a bit?
Very pleased to hear that Salem has done so well and still going strong!!!
Dickie ate all of his dinner tonight even though it had a high vitamin medicine for his cold mashed into it.
Dickie sends regards to Salem! These 3 legged friends have to stick together!
Hi Salem lost one of hie front legs but it hasn’t stopped him he sits bolt upright on his back legs to wash and I have to admire his balance and he has got our younger dog who dutifully washes his ears and face for him but draws the line at the rear end!!He is amazing his is also a house cat as we live on a road and we have the neighbour from hell. They are great how they adapt Salem has been well but he gets occasional jaundice which the vet thinks could be due to his condition but we just treat that with steroids as and when needed. When he had his cancer he was only the third cat in the country and the first to survive the chemo and throughout his treatments he has never scratched or bitten anyone but he knows exactly how to make them feel really bad he fixes them with his big eyes and blinks very slowly it breaks your heart our vet calls it the salem look.
