Hiya
I’ve had MS for over 30 years and unfortunately I had a fall on Wednesday, landing on my right leg and was in agony. I then couldn’t put the leg down and there was no way I could walk.
I got checked out at the Hospital and was told it was a muscle injury. Was advised to put ice packs on the leg & take paracetamol / ibuprofen and that it should be better after 5 days.
I know it’s only been 3 days but … I’ve in agony and can’t walk at all. I’ve been using the ice packs but I think it’s making it worse. I’m now terrified that I’ll never be able to walk again.
I’ve left a message for the MS Nurse. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice?
Thanks
Sue x

Having hit the deck myself recently with nasty consequences, I really feel for you. Particularly your fears about long-term impact on what’s left of your mobility - exactly what I fear in my own case. At our MS age (25 years for me). It becomes harder to tell what fall will be a painful nuisance and what will be a disaster. Stir chronological age into the mix, and that gets worse!
For now, I suggest you call 111.
I hope you feel better soon.
Thanks Alison - yes you’re so right it’s such a scare when you fall as you just don’t know how well or not you will recover!

Hi Sue,
I lose my balance and fall quite regularly these days, I’ve had multiple sclerosis 24 years now, so not as long as you.
I fell over last weekend in fact after a short walk back, after covid + flu jabs, it usually happens if I push myself too much and get quite fatigued.
Remembering how to break-fall from judo as a kid, I have a bruised wrist this week, but be careful when falling not to bang your head which is more dangerous.
Take care,
JP
BTW, just to cheer you up: yesterday the orthopaedic consultant advised me not to fall over again. He meant the next couple of months in particular, but I think the point was a general one. No arguing with that, is there?

Hi JP
Sorry to hear that you’ve had a few falls. Guess you’re right it’s all in the landing!

Depending on the nature of the injury, I would say three days is a bit too soon to expect much of a recovery. The reason you get swelling and pain is to protect the area from further damage, so your body is doing its job nicely.
If you still experience difficulty once the swelling goes down, then some time spent with a decent physio should see you up on your toes again.
I appreciate its frustrating and hope you make a full recovery soon.

Hi Whammel
Thanhs so much for your response. Even the Dr said I should give it 5 days. But I’m both scared and frustrated. Physio sounds a good idea. Thanks again
