Raised esr and crp in blood?

Hi everyone, just a quick question for you all Wonder if any of you have raised C Reactive Protein level and raised erythrocyte sedimentation rate level? I wasn’t sure if this was typical to have. Thank you in advance x

As far as I know they are inflammatory markers, but not specific to any one disease. I haven’t checked, but I think it’s fairly common for them to be raised in MS, but not everyone has it.

Thanks Karen - I thought they weren’t common in ms so that’s helpful to know

I could be wrong Karina - I didn’t check and my memory is woeful these days!

I’ve had markedly raised ESR before, but we (the medics and I) never found out why, and it has never been linked to my subsequent MS diagnosis.

My GP insisted I must have had an infection at the time of the test, which I was confident I hadn’t. It was tested again six weeks later, and was much improved, if still a little on the high side. Never did get an explanation.

Even a sore throat could cause it to be temporarily raised. If it’s consistently elevated, I think it’s more strongly associated with Rheumatology spectrum than with MS. I’m not sure it’s related to MS at all.

I knew that it could be raised with autoimmune conditions and I remember a doctor saying that it wasn’t characteristic for both to be raised in ms and more common with other autoimmune conditions such as lupus or rheumatology type conditions as from what I gather they both mean inflammation within the body - but didn’t know with ms that we get that

I’m with you Karina, I think that’s the distinction between a CNS inflammatory condition, and a systemic inflammatory condition, such as lupus. I don’t think MS typically causes raised inflammatory markers in the blood, but having said that I’ve definitely had them for some reason, so who knows if it was MS, or some fluke that had nothing to do with it? Just on my file as an unexplained incident, which has never been pursued further.

Interesting stuff though and interesting to find that others have it too

I’m with you guys on this. Tina hit the nail on the head. When I was tested mine was a little raised but has gone down down since. Could quiet easily have been from a cold, or any mild infection.

If it’s constantly raised I think then yes it’s more likely to be rheumatalogical or something auto-immune going on and warrants further investigations. It does depend on how raised though.

I was in hospital a few months ago with a UTI and was told my CRP was 415 (and normal was under 10!!) They did say that it wasn’t all due to the UTI and that it would be raised because of MS anyway. I should have asked what they thought my “normal” would be.

Ok so my doctor phoned today and explained the raised esr and crp a bit clearer. You get both of them raised when you have inflammation in the body be it from an infection of some sort if its only slightly raised and if both of them are significantly raised its normally due to an autoimmune condition or things like cancer and other such illnesses that spread throughout the body. Hence why there was much panic on the hospital and consultants part when both of my levels were very high before and I had abnormal PET scan and CT scan that showed up inflammation behind my nose and in my lymphnodes- which when I had the surgery an biopsy for came back negative (and they still aren’t sure what caused the inflammation) So I hope that makes sense - it was interesting to find out

Definitely makes sense. It sounds like they’re being very thorough - hope they get to the bottom of what is going on soon.X

Hi I have had several bloods done and twice my ESR AND CRP have been high, I have joint pain all the time in my arms, wrists, fingers and legs. However last tests done on Monday come back fine no further investigation… Still not sure what has been wrong with me for the last 13mths.

GP sending me to be investigated for CFS, everything is up in the air.
