There should be a box for Income Related ESA on the back, but I think they can ask for proof (in the form of your award letter from DWP) if they want to…
General exemptions from prescription costs are only applicable if you are on an income based benefit - including income based ESA. I this is the case you may be asked for evidence that you are in receipt of that benefit. DLA and its replacement PIP are not means tested benefits so don’t count. You can also be exempt from prescription charges if you have one of the conditions on the exemptions list - which, unfortunately, doesn’t include MS. However, you may still be eligible to claim an exemption if your MS can be described as “a continuing physical disability which means you cannot go out without the help of another person”. If you feel this describes your MS ask your GP to complete a medical exemption form for you. You then have to sign it and they will send it away for you (this is how it works with my GP surgery). You should receive a medical exemption card (like a credit card) in the post.
Hi I was just reading this thread and do think it’s shocking that most of you have to pay for your prescriptions. I live in Glasgow and we get free NHS prescriptions in Scotland. I honestly thought the rest of the UK was the same regardless of your status. Polly x
Hi Blossom I honestly thought everywhere in the UK got them free, bit of an assumption on my part but medicine is so vital to everyone when they need it and I know in the last 6 months I’ve went from not needing any medicine to now having multiple things a day to take and honestly wouldn’t be able to afford it all if I didn’t get them free. I now have a better understanding of the term “postcode lottery”. Polly x
