Preganacy on techfidera

I’m feeling a bit confused after some advice I was given by my neurologist and was hoping to hear about other people’s real-life experience’s

For context, I’m currently on Tecfidera and my husband and I would like to start trying for a baby soon. I was told two slightly different things about how pregnancy is handled when you’re on Tecfidera, which has left me unsure about the right next steps.

I’m wondering if anyone here has experience of finding out they were pregnant while still on Tecfidera. Were you advised to inform your neurologist only once you had a positive pregnancy test, or were you told you needed to notify them as soon as you started planning for a baby?

I’m mainly trying to understand the usual process, as I’m not comfortable with the idea of being off medication for a long period of time when there’s no way of knowing how long it might take to fall pregnant. That’s where my confusion is coming from.

Any shared experiences would be really appreciated.

This is from the professor of neurology at Barts.

Women of childbearing potential and pregnancy
“Although there is no evidence that fumarates have any reproductive toxicity, they are not recommended during pregnancy or in women of childbearing potential not using appropriate contraception. A fumarate should only be used during pregnancy if needed because the potential treatment benefit justifies the potential undefined risk to the foetus. Most neurologists allow their patients to fall pregnant on fumarates, stop the medication once the patient knows they are pregnant, and reinitiate the medication post-partum.”
