PPMS for 20 years. Now diagnosed with oesophageal cancer at an early stage. Been told not fit enough to undergo surgery, suggesting chemo/radiotherapy. Has anyone been down this road before? (male of 61 years of age).
Hi Dave, it’s very hard to get a cancer diagnoses. I was dx with breast cancer in March. I did have surgery and radiotherapy and now on drug therapy.
Mine was also caught at early stage and that can make a HUGE difference to the outcome.
I didn’t need chemo but radiotherapy is very easy. You don’t actually feel a thing. Chemo is harder but the outcomes are very good.
The good news is that all cancer treatments are MUCH better than they used to be!!! And far more people are now surviving cancer than before.
For surgery, have you asked for a second opinion or do you feel you are not up to surgery?
I wish you the very best. Please keep in touch and let us know how it’s going.
I can’t believe you’re considered not fit for surgery. I don’t have much knowledge of cancer and PPMS but it seems so cruel; as if you haven’t got enough to deal with.
Yes, this is a new thing in certain areas of the country - if you’re not fit it’s likely because the health authorities are changing the criteria to save money; for example, even if you’re slightly obese you’re deemed unfit. Get another opinion as to fitness then challenge them, otherwise keep up the chemo/radio if offered. The fact that you have MS should have no bearing on treatment, but that (and being old for example) I’m sure does affect some doctors decisions. Good luck.
