Powerchair for WAV drive from car

I’m planning to get a Peugeot impulse drive from WAV through motability but first need a powerchair before I can order. I have been told an NHS assessment for a chair has a 6-9 month waiting list so I’m thinking about buying my own wheelchair. The car provider has said that any powerchair is ok but I’m wondering if anyone has experience that can advise?

Thanks, Sandy.

Hi Sandy, just to make it clearer to me hun, do you mean you`ll be driving whilst in your wheelchair?

Oh if so, good luck! I would love to be abe to afford a drive from wheelie car!

Gettin a car adapted involves a very big up front payment. I have read it costs around £15k.

I have looked a used drive from wheelie cars. They are reasonaby priced an already to go!

It is 12 yrs since I drove so I dunno if I have the confidence to try again.

Sorry I cant answer your question, but hopefully someone else here will.

Hi there, i drive a v/w caddy from my chair and i am now in the process of changing my chair BE VERY CAREFUL i purchased a puma 40 it would not fit luckily i got a refund, the ground clearance seems to be an issue because you have to have a bracket fitted under the chair to lock into a docking system, i have an ezelock fitted to my car ,you can get another one called dock and lock with which you dont need so much room but they are very expensive i think about £1500 fitted, invacare has a site where you can find out which chairs they make brackets for this is the best place to start.I hope this helps please let me know how you get on, but any powerchair will not fit, regards Ivan.

Thanks Ivan, I’ll go back to the car providers and find out the type of docking system and the clearance needed - can you point me in the right direction for the invacare site you have mentioned? Sandy.

Hi Sandy,i am sorry its not invacare, its ezelock docking system click on powered chairs and then interface brackets it gives a list of chairs which they make brackets for i hope this helps message me if you need anything else. Ivan.

Hi Ivan, thanks for letting us all know of the possible mistakes.

Hope you get it all sorted Sandy.

One used car I saw, had a powerchair with it. good idea!

Spoken to the car people who have said I need to tell them what chair I’m getting then they will work out which docking station is needed. Getting a bit “Chicken & Egg” now! Will check Ivan’s list and once I’ve decided on a chair will go back to car company before purchase and check it will work. Still not sure to hold out for NHS assessment but don’t want to wait 6 months!

Hi Sandy, i have just thought of something else about 3yrs ago i had a nhs chair they called me in to change it when i said i needed it to drive from they would not provide one insurance i think , i ended up buying my own.One more thing make sure the wheelchair you get has been crash tested with occupant sitting in it not just for transporting in car anything else you might need please ask Ivan.

Hi again.

I think this driving from yr wheelchair is a fairly new idea, or at least not one recognised by many.

So you are testing the water for many.

Ivan, your experiences are invaluable.

Hiya KC Mobility Batley West Yorks are top notch at adaptations etc if they are still in operation. Even if they’re not in your neck of the woods they are worth speaking to for advice. Michelle

Sorry me again…we once had a van with side lift then the driving seat turned around via remote so depending what you are like for transferring from chair to driving seat dunno if this could be an option? My battery is low on puter 1% so will try think of any other info tomorrow
