Is there anyone on the forum who drives from their wheelchair. I am thinking of going down this route and want to know any pros and cons please.
I can’t afford a Motability car due to the expensive advance payment so was going to buy privately and use my PIP to fund a bank loan.
I have been shown a VW Caddy which seems suitable but can’t test drive any drive from wheelchair due to not having the locking pin fixed to my wheelchair.
Really don’t want to get this wrong as it’s a large outlay for me.
Hi …have you applied for funding through Ms society … Go to the grants section . The following is taken from there Adaptations to your car and Motability advance payments - a letter from an occupational therapist, or other suitably qualified professional, saying what vehicle or adaptations you need. They also need to say whether you can get any money from Motability and if so, how much
I often look at these cars and yes, new ones are priced rediculously high!
But low mileage used ones are very reasonable. I’ve never driven one, but would love one!
I think you need to ask a dealer if they can organise a test drive with a suitable wheelchair. Sometimes I have seen cars with the wheelchair included in the price…
I can no longer drive but I know someone who has a vehicle that he drives from his wheelchair and he only passed his test last year and he thinks it’s great.
We now have a WAV vehicle which my wife drives.
We had a used one on the Mobility scheme, it had only been driven 4000 miles.
It was only £50 deposit.
Have a look at used ones, they can be great value.
