As the title says I’ve got my PIP assesment tomorrow afternoon being done by Capita. They’re coming out to me so at least that’s one good thing. I’m a bit apprehensive about what to expect so if anyone’s got any advice or pearls of wisdom it’d be very much appreciated. Unfortunately I’m very good at plastering on the smile and saying everything’s ok, I know I need to be honest tomorrow but it’s just such a leap for me lol.
It is difficult when we work so hard to stay positive, but I’m afraid this is one of those few times when you have to be brutally honest Clairebear. If you don’t usually get dressed, or spend most of your time in your room, then don’t change your routine just because they are coming, they need to see how you really are.
As Blossom said, take your own time answering questions, and if you do things in a particular way to make life easier, explain that.
This is all about the help that you need, not what you are getting.
The doctor that I saw a few years ago was lovely, I hope you get someone as nice. Let us know how it goes eh?
Eyup clairebear It’s a healthcare professional that’s coming to see you… Not an enemy… But someone to assess your care & mobility needs. They wii not be deciding your entitlement, the dwp decision maker will do that. Be honest & say how things are for you. The decision maker will assess and then write to you, followed by a phone call to explain the decision. Have your meds / prescription at hand to show what you are on and why. Take care and please don’t shoot them Neil
I had my PIP assessment at home in October by CAPITA.
The questions seemed straightforward, I tried to put across how MS affects my life as clearly as possible. It took 2 hours and at the end there was a short physical exam. It wasn’t the worse day of my life, but it did feel quite stressful.
All I can say is, don’t rush, answer as best you can bearing in mind YOUR WORSE DAYS. Not the good ones, they don’t want to hear that MS is a variable condition (which duhhhhh it is!) they just want to know about the really difficult days.
Hi Clairbear76, I have my assessment on Monday. I have to go to a meeting somewhere I have never been, the whole idea of going to a new place stresses me out completely. I totally understand your fears, just be honest and don’t do anything that will cause pain. I luckily have my partner to take me and help me out but im still dreading it. Do not change your routine for anyones benefit, they need to know how this horrible controlling disease affects you. All you have to do is be honest. I just think that these people who are assessing have absolutely no clue what we feel like, so we must tell them the whole story, good luck let me know how you get on xx
Assesment went very well, I think. Amanda from Capita was lovely, very helpful and understanding - I think it helped that she’s a cat lady and met our two as soon as she set foot through the door lol! There was no sense that she was grilling me waiting for me to slip up, no Spanish Inquisition feeling, just very relaxed and compassionate. She did say before she left that she believes I should be entitled to something but obviously the decisions not up to her andthat, realistically, it’d be another 3 months before I hear anything back as they’re so far behind. Thats ok though, I know I’m in the system and feel so much better now the assesment is done with.
So it seemed I had nothing to be nervous about! Hope everyone elses assesment goes that well and that you get someone nice and understanding. xx
