peristeen users...help thankyou

I have peristeen and im.getting so sad with it…i can get the water in but only once has it worked properly…it feels like it pushes the harder stuff up not out sorry tmi…i either get icky water or weird worm like poo bits that come out quite a lot but stinks…really weird…im.fed up tried it fir ages now…i so hoped it would work but looks like im looking at ileostomy which is last thing i want…when you use do proper poop come out? i do it all.rigjt and can get up to 1000ml in…fed up x

I’ve been using Peristeen for two years now. It sounds as if you have really impacted faeces and you are trying too hard by using a large quantity of water to move it. Where is your continence nurse, she should be able to advise you? Try taking your time and only pumping six times and then sit and relax for five minutes. Then try another six pumps and relax again and so on. If you are using the whole water bag quickly you will only expel watery stuff if you are really constipated. Are you using warm water? I find that body temp or just above works better for me.When you get a result then use it every morning so that your body gets into a pattern. The worse thing you can do is to strain as this will result in an anal fissure which will be very painful. I hope this helps you.

One thing l realised when l started to use one was that the water has to be warmer then l first realised. Body temperature is hotter then you think. And l always hold the cath in place the whole time - if you put too much air in the balloon bursts.

lf you are really impacted - it might be better to have colonic irrigation by a therapist first. Or a dose of Picolax. Once you are empty - it will be easier to use.

My problem is the opposite - l have very loose bowels and hardly any control. l take Loperamide/Codeine to try to bung me up first - then use the Peristeen.

Give yourself plenty of time - have a hot drink ready and a something to read - and l always have the phone with me in case l need help.

Put the water container on a stool - l think it works better up higher. And when you are ready to let the air out - get your knees up as high as possible - this is the best position for it to work.

ln can take 30/40 mins to empty completely - so don’t be too hasty.

Once you have done it several times - it will become much easier and instead of doing it daily - you will be able to do it every other day - or even just twice a week.

Look at the dvd again - or contact Coloplast for advice.

Hope you get some better results.

Thank.you my continence nurse is useless shes basically dissapeared…when she showed me how to use it she rushed through…i.will.do it a lot slower and use warmer water…i may even try it lying down give tummy a good massage…picolax doesnt work on me at all non of thrm do as i have no peristalitis and also have crohns disease…i hate my bowels more rhan anything else…would choose my paralysed legs over my bowel…i think i am very bunged up higher up and in lot of pain…thank you x

This is all so distressing for you - a call to Coloplast might get you one of their specialist nurses to help. Your question re - does the ‘proper poo’ come out - l find it just gushes out as mucky water with lots of bits. Crohns - is also a auto-immune disease and like Coeliac - is better with a gluten-free diet. l am so much better going gluten-free. l take a high dose vitamin d3 and b12 -and l take magnesium- which is also a laxative. lf you don’t take vitamin d3 - just google vitamin d3 deficiency ms/crohns.

There has been another post about coffee enemas - might be an idea to try.

Can you get your knees right up - as this really is the best position as straining too much can cause more problems. l have a stand around my loo for support - and l can just position it in front of me and lift my legs onto it.

Spacejacket…do you use it everday? And does it always come out as icky water with bits in?i have called coloplast and asked to speak to nurse noone called back sadly…i so want it to work x

l used mine every day for about 2 weeks - at first. Then gradually used it less - now l use it the night before if l am ‘going out’ early in the morning - My bowels are much better behaved since going gluten-free - no grain.

Yes, it does come out as icky water with bits.

l expect Coloplast are now on xmas break.

Lets hope it works better for you so you can feel ‘comfier’ for xmas.
