Painful spasms in feet and calves

Oh my goodness… I got into bed early last night and my legs started firing off twitching, pulsating, which I could feel with my fingers. Then my left foot started to spasm, I couldn’t straighten my toes, I hobbled to the bathroom to get the baclofen, within in an hour spasms have gone.

Sometime in the middle of the night, both my claves started to cramp. Honestly, there was a knot in my left calve that felt like the size of an egg, I am not exaggerating it sat in the palm of my hand. I screamed out to my husband to rub, add pressure, squash. Eventually the pain subsided, I cried myself to sleep. This is a regular occurrence.

Does this sound familiar, and how do you cope?

Magnesium can ease problems with spasm & cramp and is a useful mineral, so no harm in trying. A bit of stretching might help.

Hi I use magnesium tablets and magnesium spray is good as well

Hi Whammel, thank you. When I stretch out my toes to try and ease the pain, the spasm initially gets worse as my toes contort. I will give magnesium a try though. I think boots used to see magnesium tissue salts. Years ago I used to take them for migraines.

Oooo, magnesium spray. Is that an over the counter medication?

Hi No you can buy from Holland and Barrett not sure if you are in England or off the internet

So very sorry. I have similar issues that are so so so unpleasant. I take Sativex. For several years I paid £450/month for (it was worth it, the pain had been so bad) also diazepam, stretching & massage.

I’d really look into Sativex - it’s been a game changer for me xx

I also bought a massage gun off Amazon that is surprisingly effective, as well as a roller (even a standard rolling pin helps a lot)

I don’t like TENS machines on my calves because I’ve had them create an even worse spasm than before, but I have had good results from shockwave treatment (a professional physio administers it - it’s basically painless) and the big guns for me are dry needling sessions. They hurt really badly but it’s worth it to iron out those persistent knots.

There are reasons a lot of muscle relaxants don’t work for me, but Sativex was such a help (nighttime use only for me - my pain is worse then, and no one notices if I’m a bit dopey)
