Hi, since Sunday night my right side has been very painful, very very tender to touch, even to tighten the belt on my trousers and if I twist to the side that is sore but if I am just sitting down, it feels ok. I don’t feel ill at all, no sickness, diarrhoea, no temperature. Saw my gp this morning, I managed to produce a urine sample while I was there and she has given me some antibiotics for a urine infection. However she said the area where I had pain was not typical of the area where most people experienced pain with a urine infection, and she is considering the fact that I may have a problem with my gallbladder or more likely that I may have appendicitis because the area of my pain is typical fo both things. However with either of those she would have expected me to feel ill. So my questions are Has anyone had pain in their right hand side when they have had a urine infection and has anyone had a urine infection without feeling ill? Thanks Cheryl:-)
Hi Cheryl, have you considered it might be MS ‘hug’? I sometimes get it on one side only… usually my right side… and is very painful.
Google ‘MS hug’ and see what you think.
I have also had gall bladder prob’s (had it removed eventually) and it did hurt a great deal but was not painful on touching the area as yours is… which makes me think it more likely to be hug.
A GP wouldn’t necessarily know about hug so it’s worth finding out about it yourself. If you think it might be hug, post again and I’ll post some advice that might help.

Thanks Pat, I hadn’t thought about ms hug tbh, I was more worried about things like appendicitis, gall bladder, liver (she said my liver didn’t feel enlarged). Ms hug wouldn’t certainly explain why I don’t feel I’ll, she was a bit surprised that I would have gall bladder problems, appendicitis without being I’ll, but she said you always get atypical cases. Interesting what you say about you gall bladder too. This pain just came on suddenly, away to look up ms hug now. Thanks again Cheryl:-)
Hiya Cheryl
So I take it when you gave the urine sample to the GP that tested it to show there is an infection and they are sending it too the lab to find out what it is? This is why she has given you some antibiotics?
When I had my first UTI I did have a pain in the back area on both left and right. I also felt a bit spacey sometimes and my fatigue increased as well. Also, more gory effects down there as well but I won’t go into detail!
I have an ache that is on my left side that I presume is a residue effect from an attack in May 2011. However, I have never had a tender to touch episode. Just the dull ache. As you know, though, MS can throw so many sensations at us and is different for different people.
You need to really make sure it’s not the MS I suppose.
Marty
Hi Cheryl,
I get stitch like pains in my right hand side but never have a uti when tested? Best to be sure though.
I hope your antibiotics work and that the pain goes away. not nice not knowing whats going on is it.
Get well soon,
bren

Thanks Marty, yes they have sent a sample to the lab, tbh I had never considered ms to be the cause until Pat mentioned the ms hug which does sound very likely. Guess I have to wait and see if the antibiotics help! Bren, you’re so right, it’s not nice not knowing what’s going on. I’ve been so worried about this all week but tonight I feel much better having spoken to a doctor about it and knowing what I might have even if the urine infection isn’t the cause of my pain. However I’d be inclined to think I wouldn’t have two things wrong so if I have a urine infection that sounds like it probably is the problem. I’m hoping so! Cheryl:-)
Hi Cheryl, here are my ‘copy and paste’ hug tips… just in case it is hug:
It’s a spasm of the small muscles between the ribs. Here are some tips that might help:
· Much worse in heat
· Much worse when fatigued or stressed
· Don’t wear a bra (it irritates the muscles)
· Don’t wear tight clothing… the looser the better
· Avoid large meals… little and often is better
· Lie down in/on bed if you can… and lying completely flat often helps
· Take 2 Paracetamol… if you are not on other pain med’s
· Try controlling your breathing… deep in through the nose and slowly blow out of mouth… and try and relax whole body while doing it
· Stay as cool as you can but don’t have cold shower… luke warm is better
· Rest, rest, rest and then get some more rest (if at all possible)
· Gently rub the affected area. It might feel like it’s bruised… don’t worry, that’s normal

Hi Cheryl If you have a UTI it is likely to exacerbate your MS symptoms anyway, so it is possible that the infection has brought on ’ the hug’ I think. I hope the antibiotics will clear up the infection and that you will start to feel better. Teresa xx
Thanks Pat, these are good tips but I’m not sure it is am ms hug I have. Thanks Teresa the thing is it hasn’t made my symptoms worse and I don’t feel ill at all. I’m a but worried about it tbh and it isn’t any better today either. Cheryl:-)
