Osteoporosis

Hi All,
I’ve recently been diagnosed with Osteoporosis and have been prescribed Alendronic Acid. Apparently it can cause hair loss among other side effects. Can anyone tell me if they have been prescribed this drug and experienced this?
Many thanks, Sandie

Hello @elvelero

I don’t have osteoporosis, but do have osteopenia. (A kind of forerunner to osteoporosis - weak bones and a loss of bone mass.)

I take Alendronic Acid to try to protect my bones. I’ve not had any significant side effects from it, and I was expecting to. You have to take it with loads of water to make sure the drug speeds through the oesophagus (and remain upright after taking it).

For example, I took my Alendronic Acid this morning together with a large glass of water, another large glass with Movicol and water - both drunk quickly with a straw. Then I had grape juice, Actimel and a cup of weak tea. (I’ve obviously spent a lot of time since then weeing!)

I’ve not had any hair loss. But I am blessed with a hell of a lot of hair, so lots of it has always fallen out, not that it would be noticeable given how much is left!

In your position, I’d start the Alendronic Acid and see how your hair behaves. If you lose a lot, then speak to your GP to see if there’s an alternative (I’m pretty sure there were a few different drugs that I could have taken).

Good luck

Sue

Many Thanks for your reply, I’ll take your advice and like you said, I can always change it if needs be.

Best Wishes, Sandie
