hi all, having a bad flare at the moment, legs worst they have ever been. However my main worry is my left eye, I have pain in it and slightly blurred vision, went to gp and he said he thinks optic nerve inflamed gave me steroids 30mg decreasing by 5mg daily for 5 days.
i only have 10% vision left in my right eye so I am really frightened of the sight in my left eye being compromised. Has my gp got it right or should I have gone to a&e to see if I needed iv steroids, I was afraid that would be an over reaction. Now I am panicking that I am going to end up practically blind.
reassurance needed,

Hi Ann,
i have recently suffered with this. When I saw my GP he sent me to see an eye specialist the same day. I had some tests and my sight was monitored, when it went to 20% I was give iv steroids for 3 days as a day patient. When I last saw the eye specialist my sight was back to 70%. I will see the specialist again in a few week to check the progress. I have been told it can take a few months to get better but I have also been told that the sight opinion the affected eye may never be 100%. It is about 3-4 weeks since this problem started. I hope this helps, if I were you I would ask for a referral to an eye specialist as soon as possible. My GP certainly thought it was important.

Hi Ann, well it’s certainly not uncommon with MS although it’s generally more a problem with RRMS.
In your shoes, I think I would go and see and optician just to get a 2nd opinion. GP’s are certainly not eye specialists.
From what I understand, once the inflammation goes the eyesight returns to how it was before. But an optician will be able to put your mind at rest.
Hope this helps.
Thinking of you… it’s very frightening to have vision problems but hopefully it will soon return to normal.

Hi Ann, sorry to hear you aren’t very well. I’m with Pat on this one, I’d see the optician too. I’m no expert but my daughter had steroids for a neurological symptom and the dose was much higher. As I said, I don’t know enough to comment intelligently, but I’d definitely contact the Neuro or ms nurse for their opinion. I hope you feel better soon, please let us know how you get on.

Hi all
After a bit of advice. I went to my options last Monday as I was struggling to focus on things. He said my optic nerve looked healthy and good but he wanted to refer me to the eye clinic. He said he wasn’t concerned and good be a wait. I call my MS nurse to let her know whatwas going on and she got me in the day after. My scans came back ok, couldn’t see much. She said she can see inflamation at the back of my eye and sent me away with steroid eye drops for a week. My vision got worse and could barely focus on anything. So when I had an appt this week I let her know. She said yes I can see its got worse my fields test shown that and the scan showed optic nerve imflamation this week. Am really scared as had eye drops for a 10days now and steroids for 3 and no improvement. Just after advice I am taking 500mg of methylprednisolone. Has anyone taken these and made a full recovery or should I be asking for IV steriods. So concerned I will loose my vision in my right eye. Have a 4yr old little boy and I can’t imagine anything worse. Sorry for the long post just scared and would appreciate any advice from anyone else been in this situation.
