The police did see the incident as a problem, otherwise why would they have asked the op if he wanted the offender charged?
There have been times, on TV, when Stephen Hawkings name has been used as a joke. Something I’ve never been able to understand! He must be an easy target…yet one that has never deserved such ridicule!
Schoey - if you felt so strongly why didn’t you want the guy charged by the police?
Not presuming to speak for Schoey but a lot of people are reluctant to take such incidents forward because, whilst they are pleased to see the Police come and defuse a situation by giving the abusive person a talking to, they do not wish to escalate things further. The decision to take things further is the responsibility of the police or the CPS not the victim although the victim’s view is, of course, respected.
The remark ‘Oi Stephen Hawking’ deeply affected the OP - but it doesn’t follow that because the OP was offended a ‘hate crime’ was committed.
NO crime was committed
Off the top of my befudled head there are potentially a few criminal offences committed in these circumstances (in England/Wales)including causing harassment, alarm or distress under S4, S4A or S5 of the Public Order Act 1988. The references to “a hate crime” here do not refer to stand alone offences but to the motivation of the offender and the effect on the victim.
Partly and because I do not wish to be looking over my shoulder whilst enjoying a drink.( gin !) No drink driving involved of course !
Gin! Now you are talking my language Schoey. Bottoms Up!
Krak…you seem to be unable to see the problem from the op’s point of view.
And Boblatina 's comments should suffice and end this thread…the op was probably just seeking support and understanding from us, which the majority of us gladly give.
