If I looked in the mirror would I be able to tell if inhave nystagmus I.e. see my eyes jerking Please help as I have gone into panic mode Awaiting MRI results
I do not know if you would be able to see it but I would think probably yes. I had this about 8 years ago and I saw multiple images that moved, it was very disorientating. I also had it about 15 years prior to that but the symptoms were a bit different. I think they should be able to diagnose it from your symptoms. I hope you feel better very soon as this is a really horrible symptom. Both times I made a full recovery, the first after about three weeks and the second time took longer, several months. Carol
Does it feel like your eyes got left behind then jerks to catch up? I ask because thats what I get of varying degrees and random ,not all the time and never see it in a mirror when I’ve tried. More irritating than anything else tbh.
It is very doubtful if you will ever see nystagmus effects in a mirror.
The moment the oscillation starts, your gaze will no longer be on the mirror, so you will not see the eye movement.
An exception to this might be if only one eye oscillates.
Trouble is, we take our vision for granted until something goes wrong. Then, most of the conditions are very difficult to self-diagnose. If you do have nystagmus, it should be possible for someone standing in front of you to see the oscillation - other than a professional, they may not be able to analyse it, but at least they should be able to see if it happens.
Do please note that a formal diagnosis of nystagmus could lead to a classification of “partially sighted” - and that has good and bad points.

I felt nystagmus the last time I was tested for it. It was totally bizarre. As my eye moved, with my neuro checking my eye movement, I could feel them, or one? jumping along the line the light moved along.
I don’t know if you can see it yourself. But I don’t understand how you can. Can you look at your eye and also move it to follow a light from left to right? I’m no expert so it’s just my opinion. I’d love to know the answer though!
Thanks for your help.
