Nursing care support

Hi my name is Ann. My best friend has been moved to a private nursing home since the sudden death of her husband and primary care. She is double incontinent needs a hoist and is in a lot of pain. The painkillers she receives are paracetamol. They are no use. Codine makes her constipated so she won’t take them. Are there better pain killers for her spasms. How do I get them prescribed. Also any recommendations for a good cushion for her wheelchair. She finds it painful to sit in for more than an hour so she is not mixing with other people much. Sorry so many questions but I feel she has not received proper MS care since her husband died.

Hi, I am so sorry to hear how yourfriend is.

Baclofen may help with spasms. I swear by amitriptyline for nerve pain.

Presumably the first point of contact for medication would have to be her GP. Or try contacting her MS Nurse or neurologist if she has one or both. I know of people with MS who take Gabapentin and Pregablin, but have no experience of either. Maybe research those.
As for the cushion maybe she could get advice from a community occupational therapist or physiotherapist, again I think the referral would have to be via GP/MS nurse/neurologist. I have a cushion like this on my wheelchair. I bought it online by searching “riser cushions” it’s described as “elevating chair cushion”

Hope your friend gets some relief.
