Hi, I’ve just rung the hospital to ask for a copy of my mri results and was told they are not allowed to send them. I explained my g.p had seen them and told me what the results were but he just said they are not allowed to send copies to patients! Am I wrong in thinking that I have a right to a copy? Thanks
That sounds a bit odd to be honest Mamabear. I phoned my hospital last week and they are sending me a form to request a copy for a charge of £10. May be worth giving them another call and if they still say no, give your neuro’s secretary a call.

Thanks mags, I thought id read on here that patients are allowed a copy. I should get an appt with the neuro soon so I’ll ask her if I can have one
They can make a charge, but they definitely have to give you a copy. (The only reason to withhold access is if the content would be harmful or if it contains another person’s information - it would be pretty hard to argue MRI scans would do either of these!)
This is an extract from http://www.nhsmedicalrecords.org.uk/index.php.
“As of the 24th October 2001, the Data Protection Act 1988 ‘Subject Access’ superceded the Access to Health Records Act 1990, except in the case of a deceased person when the Access to Health Records Act 1990 will still apply. Everyone has the right to access personal data held about themselves in either computerized or manual form, whenever the record was made. This includes NHS medical records and private records made by doctors and other health professionals.”
Your neuro won’t be able to make a copy for you because the disc has to have software installed on it too. Your best bet is to speak to someone in Records if the MRI Unit is being awkward.

Thanks for the info karen
yes you are able to to have a copy, I completed an authority form and requested a copy of the report and disc, I sent a cheque for £25 with the completed form and they posted report and disc back to me via registered post.
