New in Birmingham

Hi everyone, I am newly diagnosed and really want to meet others to see what happens next. Or just talk, Sarah

Welcome, Sarah. I have found this forum to be a great support to me personally over the years.
Sometimes it’s a relief to talk to others who just ‘get’ it because they’ve been there too. As a newly-dx person it can be exhausting trying to explain things to non-MS people around you who would like to help but really have no idea.

I see that in terms of meeting people local (ish) to you there is a Birmingham group.

Hi Sarah!

It’s probably worth seeing if you can find out if the MS Society has a group near you. Once or twice a year around here there is a day long event for newly diagnosed people, and I found it really useful. They usually have guest speakers such as neurologists or nurses and plenty of tea and biscuits!

There’s also lots of more local support groups that can be great, when I was first diagnosed I tended to find though that they met during working hours, and as a result most of the people that went along were at the more advanced end of the scale of disability which was a little bit offputting and difficult to relate to. I say that now as somebody firmly at that end of the scale :joy: I know a lot of local groups have Facebook groups now as well, so maybe you can find them on there and see if there’s any social things happening that you’re interested in. If not of course, you could always set one up! The MS Society are really good helping out arranging these things in my experience.

Welcome to the forums though, hopefully you’ll find these useful as well.
