New Car

Picked up my new Motability car last week, my 1st Estate. Massive difference as I can now get the scooter in the boot as well as luggage/shopping, something that just wasn’t possible with the hatchback I had previously.

The best thing was that, having picked the car up on Wednesday, we headed up to the Lake District. returned home Saturday morning to find a cheque for £250 on the mat (good condition bonus for the old car). Talk about quick, the cheque was dated the day after we swapped the cars!

Hey, what great news! A new car and a cheque to boot!

Enjoy. My last car was a ford estate and i used to get my scooter in on ramps, by myself!

That was all 14 years ago, but the memories are good.

Excellent news.

We’re due for our new car in December, the trouble is I can’t stop my OH talking about what car to get, pointing them out, saying ‘we could get one of those’. I’m getting really bored of it. It’ll be lovely when we get there, but blimey, it’s only May!!

I can just about lift the scooter in by myself but I will look at ramps

I was actually about to order mine in October when my DLA>PIP letter arrived to it feels good to finally get my hands on the ew one. Kind of fortuitous really as the new model came out in between and was still nil advanced payment.

You’ll be surprised how quickly December will come around Sue and you’ll need to arrange all those test drives. wink

I had been looking at SUVs but an estate would fit everything in that I need, An estate would have a lower lift for my 'get in and out leg’thank you. M

Hi Ellie

I stayed at the Kendal Travelodge in the Accessible room.Nice large wetroom.

How disabled do you have to be to get a mobility car? I have a spastic right leg with foot drop and no knee bend which makes walking tiresome. However with regard to DLA I dont need help with my personal care.

I am told you need the higher rate DLA before you can get mobility allowance. I dont need the DLA - just the mobility as that is were my problem is.

Hi Moyna

To qualify for a motability car you need to qualify for the enhanced rate of PIP for mobility. The rules for qualification are you get one score out of the following statements:

  1. Planning and following journeys.
    a. Can plan and follow the route of a journey unaided. 0 points.
    b. Needs prompting to be able to undertake any journey to avoid overwhelming psychological distress to the claimant. 4 points.
    c. Cannot plan the route of a journey. 8 points.
    d. Cannot follow the route of an unfamiliar journey without another person, assistance dog or orientation aid. 10 points.
    e. Cannot undertake any journey because it would cause overwhelming psychological distress to the claimant. 10 points.
    f. Cannot follow the route of a familiar journey without another person, an assistance dog or an orientation aid. 12 points.

  2. Moving around.
    a. Can stand and then move more than 200 metres, either aided or unaided. 0 points.
    b. Can stand and then move more than 50 metres but no more than 200 metres, either aided or unaided. 4 points.
    c. Can stand and then move unaided more than 20 metres but no more than 50 metres. 8 points.
    d. Can stand and then move using an aid or appliance more than 20 metres but no more than 50 metres. 10 points.
    e. Can stand and then move more than 1 metre but no more than 20 metres, either aided or unaided. 12 points.
    f. Cannot, either aided or unaided, –
    (i) stand; or
(ii) move more than 1 metre. 12 points.

To qualify for the standard rate you need 8 points, for the enhanced rate, 12 points. For a Motability car, you need the enhanced rate but you could still qualify for the standard rate, and use the money to help get a car and at least get a blue badge.
