MRI tomorrow

Hi, I’m having a mri tomorrow almost 16months after my initial ones of head and a second of my neck. I’m feeling anxious. Didn’t like the closed in feeling. Also just worried about getting there. I have a mile to walk to the bus then its either 2 buses or 1 bus and a mile to the hospital. I’ve got so dependant on my daughter helping me or mike driving me , I feel scared without them there. I get a little confused and my daughter quite often helps me across the road if s busy. I’ve turned into a real wimp.

Hi Tonka, that is a long way! I’m assuming a taxi will be too expensive?

I always find the thought that I might be late for an appointment adds greatly to the stress. It’s worth leaving much earlier than you need to and have a coffee and bite to eat at the hospital.

I know it’s not pleasant being in the scanner, but keep in mind that it’s perfectly 100% safe in there, that it’s necessary to find out what’s going on, and that you will have a ‘panic button’ to hold. It’s not nice but it is soon over with and it’s important to have it done.

Try and give yourself a treat afterwards if possible.

Take it slowly, gently, and remind yourself that it will soon be over.

Have you a friend or neighbour, who might go with you?

A treat sounds like a good idea. I’ve always been too tight to pay for a taxi to take me on a journey that for the normal me would be a 20min walk. Have you had an mri with contrast. Is this when they inject a dye in to you? I get very tired. I’m hoping I can doze off in the scanner (though its noisy.) 1st mri I had I kept focused on the mirror so I could see out. It scared me. The 2nd I kept my eyes closed and tried to think about anything else. Does anyone have their own coping strategies I could try.

Tonka means hard/robust/indestructible like Tonka Toys; no way are you a wimp.

Don’t forget; it’s about £10; get a copy of your images. May come in handy next time to compare as they have been known to lose them.

Go through your times tables. Hard when you learnt them so long ago! Keeps my mind occupied for the whole scan!

I’ll try times tables. Thanks for the support. never knew you could ask for a copy of mri. would they still have access to previous mris? Not that it would mean anything to me, I’d be interested to see and show my daughter who’s taking gcse biology.

They might do - I had a scan last Friday and when I asked if I could get a copy they had to tick a box to say whether I wanted all my scans or just the most recent.

In my MRI I found myself singing along to the scanner - during one of the noises I was convinced it was going to burst into Fatboy Slim’s Rockafeller Scank!

Good luck tomorrow Tonka. I hope you get on OK and do treat yourself afterwards! Teresa xx

do you have to let them no in advance if you want a copy ?
