MRI scan result now lumbar puncture

Hi there

I’m wondering if anyone has had a similar experience to myself.

I had suspected optic neuritis back in November and with a family history of MS (grandmother) the doctor recommended an MRI scan. I am pregnant and needed to wait until after Christmas for the MRI so I had passed a certain point in pregnancy. The doctor I saw seemed concerned with my symptoms (pins and needles a few times, eye pain, colour vision loss, headaches).

Since then my vision has come back but I am getting headaches every day, feeling unbalanced, tingling sensation in my face and ache in my arm a few times. Even though my vision is no longer blurry it feels quite unbalanced and I can stand bright lights. A check up in December found a small bleed at the back of my eye which I was told was a sign I have had optic neuritis.

I received my results this week, only finding two small spots of fluid/inflammation at the front part of my brain. I saw a different doctor who was very hard to discuss my results with and didn’t even seem to want to answer any of my questions (I only asked 2).

He has referred me to a neurologist and said I will need fluid taking from my back to find out what the fluid is on my brain. I asked if we can rule out MS as optic neuritis wasn’t mentioned on my scans but he said no. He also said I could accept how I feel and just carry on …

With the waiting list I will be very pregnant when I have a lumbar puncture. My husband wants me to ask for a second opinion from the first doctor I saw
… I just feel so confused and wondered if anyone had had a similar experience. thank you.

I am sorry that you have all this clouding what should be an exciting time for you and your husband.

Personally, I would be inclined to wait until you have spoken to a consultant neurologist and had more info from the LP (if he/she wants you to have one) before deciding what, if any, further professional opinion you then need.

Thank you! Hopefully it’s not too long to get an appointment :crossed_fingers:t2::crossed_fingers:t2:

In theory the LP is v similar to a spinal you’d have if you were to have a c-section (except fluid out instead of in) - so your advanced stage of gestation should be irrelevant if that’s been giving you concern. X
